| Feeding Hi everyone! My 9 month old Yorkie won't eat on his own. I told Vet & she said, "let him be. We will eat when he's hungry." Well, Romeo hadn't eaten in 4 days, to the point he was throwing up bile. I sat down and spoon fed him, the way he likes, and he gobbled up his food. My question is: does anyone else have to spoon feed their Yorkie? I don't mind doing it but I hope there is a way to fix this. |

| Hi! He eats Wellness stews in a variety of flavors, Royal Canin Yorkie puppy kibble, Royal Canin poodle puppy kibble, Royal Canin canned food, & as a treat every once in a while he gets Purina Beneful. |

| Put some Nutrical, karo syrup, local honey or even sugar on your finger & stick it in his mouth to give him some energy, perk him up a bit & then call your vet to tell him about the continued anorexia, now bile vomiting. Don't let him get dehydrated either. Very tiny Yorkies can die from lack of glucose or dehydration. Unless vet says differently, I'd keep giving him some karo for energy every couple of hours and even poke in a few grains of mashed up plain white rice or a teaspoon of white bread soaked in water into his jowl pouch, holding his little mouth shut until he swallows it. He's got to have some nourishment unless the bits of food causes vomiting.

| He will eat once I sit down & feed him with a spoon. He will eat every last morsel. The problem is that he has to be fed otherwise he won't eat. My concern is that if I go on vacation & have a sitter, they have to spoon feed him. I guess I just want him to be more independent |

| How big is he, height, weight? How often do you normally hand feed and how much food per session? If you put down freshly warmed up bits of boiled, chicken or turkey hot dog in the bowl, will he still not eat from the bowl? Is it just his regular dog food he refuses to eat from a bowl? Has he had any obedience or trick training at all? What is his routine day like, i. e., how much actual exercise does he get, is he allowed sufficient time to sniff/'read' all the exciting scents/messages left by other dogs/cats/assorted other animals/birds when outside? How much time w/life-enriching activities such as training, interactive playing, activities that reveal his skills? Is he very dependent on you, clingy, insecure if you are in another room or getting ready to leave the house? Try a change up. Try feeding him from a plate in a new spot in the home. Or use a new bowl and put the old one away. I'd try changing his feeding location to a totally difference place in the house to sort of 'reset' him. See if he'll eat off the floor. As a test, place bits of his regular food on a paper towel floor, bits of turkey weiner or boiled chicken with his empty new bowl a foot or so away. If he eats his food that way, eventually move his bits of food closer to the bowl until a few of the choicer bits are actually in it, add kibble as tolerated and then all of the food, as long as he's eating things from the bowl. After 15 - 20 minutes, I'd take up remaining food and place it down only at his next mealtime. Try feeding him from an interactive/foraging dog feeding bowl/toy or several different ones, to encourage his inborn foraging instincts. Tibbe chooses foraging over bowl feeding every single time! He LOVES having to 'work' for his dinner as dogs have for centuries in time.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Have you tried changing bowls...? Some dogs don't like metal bowls or glass bowls etc, just depends. I would get a different kibble. What are you feeding?

| Drop the purina beneful is linked to deaths. What have your tried putting his food in or on? Maybe a small plate would work better?

| Monroe has been super finicky her entire life and we had to try so many things to finally find something that worked, most of the time (I still have to hand feed her sometimes). I would try different bowls & feeding techniques (moistening the food, warming the food, mixing the wet food completely, leaving it on the side). I finally realized Monroe will only eat if the dry food is moistened with warm water for about 2 minutes then drained and mixed with boiled chicken, I can also sometimes get her to eat some wet food if I put it on the side… she will not touch any of the food if it’s mixed in. I also find that if I get her excited before putting her food down (I sing them a song) then make them sit & wait before putting down the bowls she’ll usually eat (like it’s a treat). If I have to hand feed her I try to just get her started and then make her eat on her own. We’ve had much trial & error over the years; mostly error unfortunately. She had an episode of either pancreatitis or enteritis last year and one interesting thing the second specialist said was, that she may have suffered from intestinal upset her entire life and that may be why she wasn’t eating. So maybe an antacid or limited ingredient food… I’d discuss with your vet. This specialist also thought it could be behavioral; I honestly would panic when Monroe wouldn’t eat when she was so tiny… ugh, a picky Yorkie is quite the challenge! Would love to hear how it goes for you!!! Best of luck!!! |
