Default Dental Cleaning and Update on Bella

Bella is having her first dental cleaning next Saturday. I was quoted a really reasonable price for NYC ($450 with blood work included). None of my dogs have had dental cleaning before and I was wondering what I should expect.

I was also quoted if any teeth need to be pulled it will be from $5-$20 per tooth depending on the tooth and I will not know until the cleaning. I don't think she will need any teeth pulled because her teeth are generally cleaned but the Vet wrote tarter issues in the original vet records so for insurance purposes I need to get her a cleaning to avoid any pre-existing conditions.

Is the price per tooth reasonable?

On another note she is still struggling with potty training. Yesterday she did good going outside, but today refused to go. Since she has peed twice on the bed she no longer has access to it until bed time and I have her in a diaper. I take it off in the morning. She seems to like to pee in it overnight as each morning it is full. I take her out beforehand to pee but she refuses to go. So it must be what she is comfortable with. I actually don't mind her going in the house and don't get upset if she misses the pee pad as long as it is not on my furniture but I cannot get her to stop yet peeing on the bed. Hopefully with time and consistency she will change her behaviors. She also urinates (or spills when I get home and she is supper excited) only a little comes out I don't think she realizes it.

We are going to visit my sister this weekend so I will see how she does in a carrier. I haven't tried it yet and realized I need to start practicing with her tonight as I do not know how she will react yet.

The best part of yesterday was we were watching tv and Thumper and her were on my lap and he went over and started to kiss her face. The sweetest moment ever.

I should have named her Tigger because she reminds me of him she is long and lean and jumps on her hind legs in excitement. I am working on telling her no as I worry about her injuring herself but it is quite adorable.

Please don't use a diaper. It will not teach her anything and can cause urine scald and rashes which can lead to infections. If she is going potty where she is not supposed to look at play pens and crates rather then a diaper that is just such a bad idea.

Good on you for getting the dental done, and yes, the price does sound reasonable. Now on to the potty training issues...

The key is consistency. And by consistency, I mean watch her like an eagle, teach her where to go, and reward good behavior. If she's peeing on the bed, then don't allow her on the bed until her potty habits are under control. We used the "crate training" technique with our Bella starting the first day we got her, and she rarely had an accident. We've trained her to use potty pads in the house, and she *never* has a peeing accident. I agree with Taylor, who said not to use diapers. You're not teaching her anything by doing that, and it could result in diaper rash or infections.

Has your Bella been spayed yet? If so, the peeing when excited could be spay incontinence. You might want to ask your vet. I'm not sure that much can be done about that.

Training to use a carrier. Not something that should be put off to the last minute. We trained our Bella to sleep in her carrier with a blanket on our night stand from the first day we brought her home, and now she views her crate as a safe space and is eager to get in it at bedtime or when we leave the house. If your Bella is afraid to get in the carrier, teach her that it is a pleasant place to be by putting in a small blanket or towel or t-shirt with your smell on it. You can also put a treat in the carrier to entice her inside. If your Bella is afraid of the carrier, it may take days or weeks to train her not to be afraid.

I very much agree with consistency in training recommended by pstinard. If I were you, I would not allow her on the bed at this point. Not until she's learned to pee on the pad consistently. I definitely would not use a diaper. You kind of have to go through a rough stage in the potty training before things get better. Unfortunately there is no short cut.

Once she learns to use the pee pad reliably, then you can allow her back on your bed. Make sure you have steps or a ramp so that she can safely go pee in the middle of the night on the pad and not break a leg.

As for training techniques, I'm also an advocate of crate training for potty training. It worked extremely well for Scottie. Sadly, not so much for Casie. I was pulling my hair out because she kept soiling herself in the crate. I was stubborn and wanted her to be outdoor potty trained. But I learned that it wasn't possible for Casie. After much too long, I had to adapt and change the training, isolating her in an area with pee pads. Within a week, she proved that she could reliably pee on the pad even when not isolated. Guess that was her way of thanking me for not crating her anymore.

I also agree that any carrier requires training. Do it ahead of time, as soon as you have your carrier, to get her accustomed to it. The last thing you want is for her to go crazy and freak out in the carrier the first time she's in it during your drive. I trained mine to like their carriers with a clicker and treats. I made it into a game. It was fun! Also, inside each of their carrier is a special toy that they only get when they're in the bag.

Default Update

Bella is doing extremely well. I only used the diaper this past Saturday when we were at my sister's for a few hours and that was because I just wanted to be extra careful. Thumper had his belly band on as well. Neither went potty in them.

She tolerated the carrier. Thumper loves it and goes right in but I still have a little work with Bella. She doesn't mind it but will bark up a storm. I ended up taking her out of the carrier on the train because I felt she was annoying the passengers with her barking. On the way to my sister's she was fine but on the way back she was not having any of it. Usually I just use an oversize beach bag to carrier the two.

She is still being stubborn when going to the bathroom but I have made some modifications to be extra careful about her not peeing on furniture.

She is not allowed on the bed at night until she goes potty. Lately she does it as soon as I get home or walk away from her. Like tonight after her dinner I went downstairs to empty the trash. I kept her in the gated kitchen as a precaution because I had a feeling she would try and pee on the bed. Good thing I did. She pooped and peed within 2 minutes while barking simultaneously and jumping to try and get out of the kitchen.

She gets very excited that she will pee from excitement so I make sure not to pick her up until she calms down. For the past three days she went outside with my dog walker twice which is an improvement. She will also pee on the pee pad when I leave in the morning. (Though lately she seems to miss it and only get the edge) I am not upset about that at least she tries.

She loves to play with her brother and they are very cute together. She goes for a check up on Saturday and praying all test come back normal.

I have aslo started to massage vitamin e and a solution of apple cider vinegar and water to help control her itching. It seems to be helping some but makes her one little stinker! I really don't want to put her on medication unless it becomes unbearable and she is hurting herself. Right now that is not the case, however, I will discuss it with the Vet.

Everyday is a new adventure with her and we are learning as we go. I love her to pieces and she is fitting in amazingly.

What's going on with the "itching"...? Topical stuff doesn't really treat the cause of this. I'd get ahead of what's really going on there, as it can def get way worse if allergies. Itching is quite a miserable state for them. Is she chewing and licking her paws...?

I am not certain she has allergies. She will lick her paws at times but it is not consistent. Thumper actually licks his paws much more than she does. She likes to rub herself against all my furniture like she is trying scratch an itch she can't exactly reach.

She will also try and gnaw/bite her behind and tail. She actually stands underneath my butcher block table in the kitchen and use it as a scratching post.

The topical stuff gives her some relief for a few days. I will mention it to the vet on Saturday I just want to try everything before resorting to medication as I am not certain she actually has allergies.

The itching whether by me using the holistic items or over time since I have had her does seem to be getting better. When I first got her all day she would scratch and bite her skin (No fleas as I checked). I have switched her diet to grain free and use Salmon Oil in her food as well. This might be helping. But again I am guessing and won't have any answers until the vet visit.
