| HELP, Safe weight loss What is a safe weight loss for a 14 pound 5 year old fur butt. Meaning, is one pound loss in a month SAFE? Over the winter Cody has gained 2 pounds and it’s ONLY January. When we can use the yard which has not been often in winter due to snow or ice, he does not run, he stalks his favorite critter rocks lol. I cannot entice him to play fetch, he’s intent on hunting and stalking. When the temps are suitable we take nice long walks within the community, also not often due to snow, ice, salted roads and freezing temps. I am thinking of food change. In the morning I am thinking of giving him ½ his food in green cut beans and ½ his kibble, at night feeding all kibble. Feeding this way every other day. I have NEVER had to put any of my babies on a diet as they never gained weight over the winter months, the were very active even confined to the house for the winter. When let out in the yard they ran and ran, they did do a bit of stalking but not like Cody does. So I don’t know what a SAFE weight loss should be. I did speak to my vet last month about this, she said his weight was ok, he was at 13.5 pounds then. He had lost his hour glass shape at 13.5. ….12 pounds is perfect weight for him. Any help would be much appreciated.

| If I can remember my Vet said 10 % food reduction it's slow but safe. I am going through this with my Lily she is one year put never seemed to loss the baby fat , she is a bigger dog than Bella but there is no hour glass figure LOL. Bella also gains some in the winter for the same reasons you have but maybe a 1/2 lb and losses it in the spring when the snow goes. I am in the middle of a food change after almost 4 year for Bella because of allergy's all the meds the Vet has tried but nothing seems to work well so we are taking chicken out to see if that helps How I hate the food battle LOL. |

| Hour glass shape lol is what I refer to dogs body shape. Looking DOWN at you dogs body what a healthy weight dog should look like. Between rib cage and where hind legs begin there should be an indention . I googled dogs body weight pic. I'll see if I can attach so you or anyone will see.

| When my Maltese turned into a sausage from eating kibble I put him on Stella & Chewys dehydrated patties. I hydrate with warm water and he absolutely devours his food. He is back to the hour glass shape. The vet was impressed with the weight loss even though it is raw food. I do give him a tiny bit of Zoey's low fat Gastro kibble at lunch and a tsp of same -canned- for dinner so he doesn't feel like Zoey gets to eat and he doesn't. This has worked great for us.

| Find the treat, that's a GREAT idea, I'll have to TEACH him that lol, he is very food motivated and good that would be good exercise. He has his last meal at 4:30 if I fed him earlier he would be looking for another meal at 8PM lol. Thank you for the treat tip Gail.

| What I do is take there food amount for the day and break it into 3 amounts that way they can have a snack in the evening with out eating more then they should. You can break the amount in as may as you need to. I have had dogs in the past that free feed and they liked to just nibble off and on all day not eating more then they should they were snackers rather then big bowl feeders. Not all dogs can be trusted to just snack. |

I measured out the daily food allowance in a little canister. Meals and rewards were taken from the canister. This helped a lot and the weight came off.
