| How Long To Wait To Test For Lymes? Found a deer tick on my little girl Carrie today. It was fully engorged and when removed (got the head) it was motionless. This tells me that it was there for quite some time and it was found on the right side of her face under her long hair. I am devastated since I am more that overly cautious of these vectors due to me living in an area where Lymes is considered an epidemic. I also use topicals 9 months out of the year. It is now getting towards the middle of November and ticks are still abundant. I am curious as to how long I need to wait to take her to get a SNAP 3DX or 4DX test done. I am confused since I have heard 3 months and some say almost 6 months to make sure it is not a false negative. Of course, if I see symptoms I will be taking her to the vet sooner. Treating her wound with peroxide then triple antibiotic. P.S. This is my first time dealing with an engorged tick on any of my dogs through my lifetime so this is new to me..and scary. Any/all advise is appreciated!

| Even if she had Lyme it wouldn't be treated unless she was symptomatic so I would just keep an eye out for the symptoms. Have you thought about the Lyme vaccine?

| No, for the risks outweigh the benefits. Because the vaccine promotes activity in your dog’s immune system, it can cause adverse reactions to the shot. The vaccine can also prompt an incurable variety of Lyme Disease to develop. Compare these risks to the fact that Lyme disease can be effectively treated with an aggressive round of doxycycline

| So no one here has ever found a tick on their dog and got them tested for lymes? That is hard to believe, for I would rather have her tested to find out than wait for her to get ill and show symptoms. Can anyone answer my question in how long is the protocol to wait to get tested to eliminate a false reading?

| My friend, who has a very small maltese, has the same vet as I do. Even though her dog tested positive and showed no symptoms, the vet gave her an option of either waiting for symptoms or treating with the doxycycline as a precaution. To ease her mind, she chose the antibiotic treatment, especially with the controversial accuracy of the 3Dx and 4DX tests respectively. Since I am not getting any feedback here (since it is the weekend and most vets are closed), I guess I will be making calls "again" to hopefully get a better idea of how long I should wait to get her tested.
