Hi guys,

Last week I took my dog to the vet to have his teeth cleaned, get his shots, etc. Well, the vet wound up doing a full mouth extraction and it really got me down...his teeth did have some plaque build up, but never in a thousand years did I know that it had gotten so bad. I still feel terrible about it, like I have failed my dog and didn't get him the help he needed in time.

Well, if there's any good news, it's that he's feeling a LOT better, so much so that he's even eating more! Anyways, what I wanted to know is if there's anything I can add to his water to help keep any germs in his mouth at bay?

I know they sell water additives at pet stores and big box stores like Target/Walmart, but I wanted to know from you guys if there were any home remedies that worked just as good.

My daughter rehomed yorkie had such awful teeth and an abcess and they removed the majority of her teeth. She was quite unwell afterward but with a couple months of care she is feeling and looking (and smelling) much better!
The vet gave her Dentahex oral rinse (chlorhexidine w/ zinc) that we wiped and then spayed on her gums. She really has adapted to eating and drinking well, and seems so much happier.

My sister in law has a tiny 3lb Pomeranian that she rescued and he has no teeth. He eats dry dog food fine and he's healthy and happy. The one plus is that you won't have to worry about any more dentals! His tongue sticks out of his mouth a little and it's quite adorable. Don't be too hard on yourself, some dogs are just predisposed to bad teeth.

Nah, I doubt I'll ever forgive myself for this.

This new vet that performed the procedure asked if my previous vet had ever recommended a teeth cleaning, and he did not. I told him that I made sure to brush his teeth at least once a day and I never fed him "human food." Once in a blue moon I gave him a small piece of fruit (I know, I know, the sugar).

The only consolation I have is that he was already eating Honest Kitchen food, which is mushy to begin with, so I'll just have to increase the amount of water to make it a little more "soupy."

For the past few years now, I've been giving him these dry treats that I break up with one of those kitchen mallets (to balance with the mushy food). Luckily I have a coffee grinder on hand that I've been using to pulverize those things.

Yes, I would recommend you buy Health Mouth - it's VOHC approved, which holds weight with me. Initially, it seems expensive...and it is....but if you just add it as a topper to their food, it lasts FOREVER! Very worth it for you, I'd think.
