YT 500 Club Member | Up date on Ruger Well it's been one week & one day since Ruger was discharged from doggie hospital, with a case of pancreatictist. We are very careful what he's eating. Yesterday he threw up, but seemed to be ok. Lots of engery, eating. Scared the willies out of me. Also, in the mornings he wants to eat wet grass when I take him out. I try my best to distract him, but he doesn't throw up after he has a bite or two. He goes Monday morning for more blood work. Does anyone have this problem with eating grass? My Vet told me eating grass was a concern. I've never known a dog or cat that didn't eat grass occasionally. Hum.... Please pray he gets a good report.

| Sorry to hear Ruger threw up, but glad he is doing well with energy and eating. Grass eating seems to be a Yorkie thing. I originally thought dogs only ate grass to try to throw up or to settle their stomachs, but I've read so many comments here about Yorkies pretending they are sheep and munching on the green stuff. My boys both grab blades of grass and weeds on their walks. In fact, a very, very long piece of dried grass came out of Teddy today. If this is a new thing for Ruger, then it is more concerning. You mentioned in your other thread that he was eating a couple cherries for treats at night. I would hold the cherries, if you aren't already. They can be irritants to the digestive track. Teddy had a very sensitive system when he was younger and could handle only a very limited set of fresh food treats. He still doesn't do well with fruits.

YT 500 Club Member | Yes, the Vet gave him canned nasty pro plan very low fat. I mix it with his Nutri Source kibble or sometimes just for a treat.

As for the grass eating, I find that they tend to do it more when they have tummy upsets. He may still be feeling a bit out of sorts. Hope his labs come out well!

| When Sammy was on a prescription diet my vet had me call the company to find out what I could add to the food without compromising the health of my dog or the benefit of the prescription food.

YT 500 Club Member | Diana, thank you so much for the advice. Yes, my Vet said we could mix it. I will definitely with hold everything if the blood work isn't good. He has to fast for this. So maybe it will be very accurate. Ruger seems to be very hungry later in the evening. He has a lot of engery. Keeps me on my toes constantly Ha! I will post another up date after blood work tomorrow. I hope I will know right then. How are your babies doing with their pancreatous?

I lost my little Scooby about a year and a half ago (at 16+ so he had a nice long life) but he first got pancreatitis when he was about 11. After that, he was very sensitive to any fat in his diet and was on low fat for the rest of his life. He ate the Royal Canin GI low fat, or sometimes I home cooked for him, and sometimes that wasn't even enough because he'd get little flares now and again. I got really quick at recognizing and managing them, so he did well but it took a lot of vigilance. A bit after we lost Scooby, I rescued the little rascal in my avatar from the county shelter. He was malnourished and underweight and his digestive system was a wreck, so I'm pretty sure that's why he was surrendered. My first thought was, "Oh no! Pancreatitis again!" but after a few months of food trials and tests it turns out he has IBD. I'm not sure which is easier to manage! But once we got his gut straightened out and had him on meds and food that agreed with him, he did a complete 180. He was about two and 11 pounds of skin and bones the day we picked him up, and a year later he tops the scales at 15 pounds and is NOT fat. Hopefully the lab work will show a perfect pancreas for Ruger, but even if it does, take my advice and take it slow introducing his regular diet back. Some dogs end up with chronic pancreatitis and it is no fun for you or him. Diana | |
