| The Honest Kitchen, my experience. (also posted on health and diet board) I posted this on the health and diet board, but this one seems to be the most active. I'm wondering what experiences anybody has had with The Honest Kitchen food. I used one of their base mixes, you add your own protein. It is more expensive, but I'm not throwing away "leftovers" because she actually eats it! Here is my original post: I just wanted to post my experience trying a new food. I'm not sure how I found it, but I started Maggie on Preference by The Honest Kitchen about 6 weeks ago and it has gone great. She was on royal canin since we got her as a puppy. For most of that time we have had to mix in chicken or beef to get her to eat. That started back when she ate chicken and rice for a few days due to tummy issues. She always tried to pick out the meat and leave kibble behind, though many times she would eat it all (if we added more meat). She rarely was excited to eat unless she smelled the meat cooking. I discovered the base diet of the honest kitchen. It is all dehydrated vegetable and fruits with no grain and no protein. You add your own raw or cooked protein. I figured I was giving her meat or chicken every day anyway and it seems like a healthier option. She really likes it! She finishes it (mostly) every time and is excited for me to feed her. I am so happy that she is interested in her food! It seems like more volume, but it's hard to tell considering the food is not compressed like kibble. She has bigger poops, but the consistency of them is good. Switching her was so easy! The first 2 tries I kept in some of her royal canin as well and she seemed to not like the new food. I realized she was still trying to pick out the meat, but it was harder because it mixes so well with the new food. I then left out the kibble and she ate it up! I just switched over completely on the third day and she had no transition problems. She seems to have more energy on her walks, but maybe that's coincidence. She's a yorkiepoo, has been weighing 11.2 but after 4 weeks on new food she weighed 11. Just wanted to share. Also, I got it at Pet Valu. I dont think petco,or petsmart carry it. It's also available online. |

| I love Honest Kitchen! We used to feed the Preference as well. It was just expensive and a little time consuming to make. Uni would bark non stop while it was rehydrating, so that was a little irritating. We found a kibble she is doing well on so we just give that. I never did find it at any of the chain stores but at local pet supply shops.

| @capt noonie, I mix 3 days worth at a time, refrigerate it and scoop it out each day. If my protein is hot I don't reheat it, otherwise I micro it. I also cook 1-3 days of meat at a time. I always try to have the Preference pre-mixed, but you are right, she does get antsy waiting for it. I cook her meat, so once she smells that...... I use 1/3 cup re-hydrated and 1/3 cup cooked meat or chicken. Does that sound ok? She is not gaining weight and is walking longer I think. A 3 lb box cost me about $32 and will last me about 2 months. I'm on the first box and still have a decent amount left. I got it on Jan 11. I can get it for less on Amazon and even less per pound if I get the 7 lb box. Not sure if I should get the 7 lb box as it will be open for over 4 months.... |

| I can't remember the size box I got, but it was a normal sized box. I did have it open for quite a long time. In their prior years, they didn't even have a ziploc top on the bags, so that was one thing I didn't like, but they put those in a few years ago. I'm thinking I paid about $20 something for a box, like high 20s but can't remember. And cooking it for three days at a time is a good idea. No clue why I never thought of that!

| I was always intrigued by THK but remember getting a sample and it was so... green and mushy looking and Jackson just looked at it like WTF is this? LOL but I wonder if he'd like it better if I had the kind where we mixed our own protein in. Glad to hear it's going well for you! Always great to find a food your pup loves and does well on.

| @Britster, You can use less water if it is too mushy. |

| Glad you had good experience with The Honest Kitchen, but we found it made Cody poop a lot, sometimes up to six times a day! We switched to Dr. Harvey's veg-to bowl along with our protein, which happens to be bison. That, along with some Benefiber, seems to have been a better combination for him. Quote:

| I love everything from the honest kitchen. They have these treats called "Wishes", they smell AWFUL but my little one goes crazy for them. He litterer spins in circles non-stop until I give him a piece. They actually sell their products at Whole Foods Market if you have one in your area, that's typically where I get their treats. I've used the Preference before, but have since switched to their regular diets. No particular reason, they loved preference + my choice of protein. I totally agree with capt_noonie about the price. But just a pointer, if you feeding preference, check out this website: The Honest Kitchen Preference Base Mix Review | PawDiet it shows prices from different stores and you can almost always find great deals shopping around online . |
