Mitsi needs a dental......advice, experiences? My little Yorkie Mitsi is around 6 and a half years old and 7-8 lbs and recently Her breath is getting bad, despite the fact I brush her teeth daily so off to the vet we went. They said She will need a dental with two teeth pulled. She is my first yorkie and My baby, I'm worried about her being put under anesthesia at her age, I have heard so many horror stories of pets getting dental s and not coming home so I am so worried for her. She hates the vet and I know She will be terrified when I drop Her off, I also worry she will be in pain. We are doing the blood work before, they said they normally do it the day of the dental and if anything is wrong they will call Me. I just wanted to ask if any other yorkie moms have any experience with this or advice?

Glad your little one came out ok I totally agree with you there, Mitsi is a little tank of a Yorkie and very independent, She gets an attitude like "Mom Really?" when I try to help sometimes haha, they are so small its hard not to over baby them at times.

| I've had dentals done on my dogs at 14 years of age! I would do preanesthethic blood work, make sure someone is monitoring your dog's vital signs during the procedure, and find out if they use safe anesthesia like isoflourane gas. There is a sticky in the library about anesthesia. It's very safe for most patients. Good luck!

We took in a little rescue toy poodle four or five years ago that is about 11-12 now. He had never had a dental and probably never even had his teeth brushed. His mouth was in terrible shape. Soon after we got him, he had his first dental and lost literally half of his teeth. About a year and a half ago, we had the rest of his teeth removed - all but three of his little canines. He was probably 9-10 years old then. He did fine with the procedure, although he had a lot of pain afterwards and we had to hand feed him for at least a month until he learned to pick up his food off of a plate. No regrets. It was the best decision we could have made for him. He was a picky eater and underweight. We didn't realize he didn't eat because his mouth hurt. He has gained about two pounds and eats like a horse now that he no longer has mouth pain. Never neglect or put off dental work. The risk of the rotten teeth is much greater than the risk of anesthesia. Good luck. Diana

I agree originally I had taken her to to value vet and they made a big deal saying it was so bad and she needed all these teeth pulled, but when I asked about monitoring during they said they did the dental literally out in the middle of the room so they wouldn't be alone, but when I asked about someone certified with Anesthesia they ignored the question. Needless to say We took Her to another Vets office, they checked Her teeth, She still needs a cleaning but we are waiting until after the holiday, they said they were not as bad as the other office said, and they want to run a full thing of blood work first. They also have someone who will watch her vitals the entire time. I feel so much better about the situation now. We have officially switched vets offices. Im pretty sure value vet just wanted their 50$ per tooth and I don't want Her to have unnecessary teeth pulled. Thank You all for your words of advice, I saw so many horror stories, its nice to see other Yorkie owners whos little ones came out of this ok.
