| New Yorkie - Not Eating Much And Need Advice Hello all, my Fiance' and I got ourselves a Yorkie last Saturday, it was 8 weeks and 2 days old at that time. So currently Bentley is just over 9 weeks old. We have tried feeding him a mixture of the food he was given before we picked him up and the food we plan on feeding him and he will barely pick at it, he almost seems scared of the food itself or the bowl. We have tried a paper plate with minimal results. I have taken him to a Vet and Bentley checks out fine. He reccomended mixing his food with baby food or straight baby food, he eats only slightly more this way. The Vet said it primarily could be the new environment and missing of his siblings that is causing him not to eat. To put it all in perspective, he is eating slightly less than 1/3 of a cup of food per day, he is drinking water it seems regularly. He urinates regularly and has a bowel movement once a day. His food is very small and he is able to get it in his mouth ok, he will eat several pieces of food if you hand feed him then he walks away and looks everywhere but at you if you try to feed him more. We have also tried making the food softer with water as well as beef broth. Bentley seems to sleep quite a bit but we hear this is normal. When he is awake he is alert and attentive and has energy to run and play. Any help or words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated. |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on the new addition to your life. I agree with your vet that Bentley is probably just adjusting to his new home. My older Yorkie, I had to hand feed almost his entire first year. He would sit next to his bowl and perform sits, asking me to hand each piece of kibble to him. I sped things up by devising a game of putting a bunch of kibble in his KONG toy. Relax, don't show Bentley and sign of anxiety over his eating. Maybe try to play games, do some trick training with kibble rewards to get him excited to eat. Enjoy your puppy!

| Maximo, thank you so very much for the reply. Your information makes us feel a little better about Bentley's eating habits. We spoke with the people we got Bentley from and the 2 remaining puppies they have are eating very similiar to how Bentley is. Prior to getting Bentley we bought some books that were specificly about Yorkies. In the book it stated as a puppy they would eat 1/3 of a cup 3 times a day. It also said you would have to strictly monitor how much they ate because they would easily over eat if given the opportunity. I think this is what caused our concern regarding his eating habits. Bentley sure is a smart and energetic lil guy. He is quite the little lover as well. His temperment is just what we were looking for. We are really enjoying him. Once again thank you for the reply. I am glad I found this forum that caters specifically to the Yorkie. |

Most likely, he's just adjusting to the new enviro...although some dogs can indeed be very finicky eaters, and this can be tough on the humans they own. May want to try sprinkling some Parmesan cheese powder onto the food, that can be nice and enticing to dogs as it's pungent. Many people just free feed as well, but it depends on what you want to do long term. Dogs brought up free-feeding don't usually overeat at all; most do super well just naturally eating when they need/want to.

Thank you very much for the reply. Bentley seems to be eating off and on through out the day. Yesterday overall I think he ate a little more. Thanks for the Parmesan Cheese tip.

| Welcome to YT, and congratulations on your new baby. Yes new home, new smells, new schedule, missing human momma, fur mamma, litter mates and mostly now a new momma, can slow down their eating, if he does not finish all his food, try waiting 20 to 30, let him run around then try hand feeding small amounts of food, and as puppies they do sleep quite a bit as they have so much energy they knock them selves out playing lol. Enjoy this puppy time, they grow so fast.

http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...-pictures.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...orkietalk.html Regarding how much food your Yorkie should be eating, keep in mind that it depends on his size and which food you feed. Some foods are around 320 calories per cup, while some of the higher protein foods are 480 calories per cup. The higher calorie foods have the nutrients more densely packed, so less is needed. Most foods have loose guidelines for quantity on the packaging. I believe they tend to overestimate, so I feed less than what they recommend. As Wylie's Mom indicated, puppies who are free-fed (food available at all times), do not really overeat. I did not have any concerns until my boys were adults. One is still a good self-regulator, but the other would overeat given the opportunity. Yorkie Talk is wonderful for info and support. I would have been lost without it!

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I agree, there is always an adjustment period when pups go to their new homes. Once he feels more comfortable in his new surrounding and with his new family he'll do much better eating and playing.

Thank you for the reply, we are finding that Bentley is eating slightly just a little more lately. He really seems to like the parmesan cheese trick on his food. He is quite the little character and seems playful, happy and full of energy.

That's good, you have to also consider the fact that their bellies are very tiny at his age as is his bladder. They can't eat or drink much before needing a trip out for a potty break.

I think a little less than 1/3 of a cup of food a day is GREAT for a 9 week old baby!! He is eating like most babies eat....grab a bite on and off all day long, nap frequently, drink plenty of water....he sounds fine. Just be sure the food he is eating, is geared towards a puppy with protein, etc....
