| To vaccinate or NOT vaccinate is the question Hello everyone - As some of you may know... My puppy who is now 18 weeks old has been sick with Kennel cough since June 7th (at 10 weeks old). She was on antibiotics until last week. She still has the cough (randomly - usually when she wakes up or gets too excited) but is less frequent and is playful and eating well. Last time we got her booster distemper shot it seemed to set her back and get her sick again... I'm wondering how long should I wait before she gets her last distemper/rabies shot. I plan to break them up just to make sure she doesn't get extremely sick. My thoughts were to maybe wait a little over a week(close to 2 weeks) of no cough before taking her to the vet for shots. Her next visit is scheduled for Saturday and she is supposed to get the distemper shot...My only concern is that she is getting a little old and I cannot take her around other dogs...will this affect her as far as socialization?? I was told that it's important to socialize them within the first 6mos of age... Thank you!

| Personally, I would be more concerned about the effects of her vaccines than socialization. Being so young, they're awfully vulnerable to so many things that I'd concentrate on her health more during her first year. |

She may be unsure around other dogs initially, but grow to be more comfortable around them. Or she may not like other dogs at all, it just depends on her personality. I have 2 who are social butterflies, 1 who doesn't like anyone outside of my home, and another who ignores everyone other than me for the most part. All received the same amount of socialization and vaccinations around the same time age wise(were completed by 6/7 months).

I always put the pups health ahead of everything else, including "play time" and "socialization", etc....I want my dogs to be as absolutely healthy as they possibly can be. Socialization is important, but no less important is physical health....kennel cough can deal much misery for several months....and it can even denigrate into more serious illness....let this baby recover from this bout of kennel cough completely....THAT is what is first and foremost. You certainly do not want to pile on more vaccinations until baby is completely over this current illness and that can easily be several months.

| Thank you all for your honest opinions. My gut instinct was telling me the same....to wait but the Vet made me feel that maybe I was making the wrong decision. This is my very first dog and I want to do everything I can to make her a healthy/happy dog. She's been through so much already and I just hope she recovers soon. Glad YT exists!! Thank you all again for taking the time to answer my question.

As trusting your vet is important, if your red flag is coming up even just a little, I think it might be worth it to check out another vet.

| Please, also remember, your vet is not a vet because it is a great way to spend his/her day.....that is how they make their living. While they are truly concerned about animals and their health, often times they get regimented and do not give variation in scheduled treatments enough consideration. You do this at this age, this at this age, that at this age, etc.....YOU have to read and learn what variations in a regimented schedule is acceptable and may be the best alternative for YOUR individual pup. The decisions you make for your pup are YOUR decisions to make. Those choices and decisions should be based on PERSONAL knowledge and your own reading and learning and exploring different choices. Socialization of a pup is important, but a sick or dead pup is not anything "socialization" does any good for. You do not ever want to do anything out in public with other dogs, if your pup is not in tip top shape and free of illness. THAT is your first and most important concern. Play dates and socialization of a sick dog is NOT where you want to be..... Do your OWN learning....read multiple vet sites and breeder sites and learn what the vaccination protocols are....and that is what you need to ask your vet about....you are an advocate for your pup.....you can not make intelligent decisions about what to do and when to do it, if you do not have a broad knowledge base. Discus any care you give your pup with your vet....explane WHY you are making/considering specific decisions...if your vet is fixated and regimated and will not reason with you and why you have made decisions, change vets! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Wait though...the waiting really depends upon when you had the last shot - you really have to base the next/last shot off of *that*...not off of symptoms of KC. This may be why your vet is advising you, bc they want you to stay on the correct recommended schedule of vaccines. Also, I'd be giving her Benadryl about 45mins prior to her shots to decrease any present histamine reaction to a vaccine.

| Thank you all for your responses. At this time I'm dealing with a very sick dog. Out of the blue she started coughing bad bad so I took her in to the vet and it turns out she has pneumonia. I'm deeply saddened by the news because this poor baby has already been through so much. I hope that God keeps her healthy and that she recovers from this. With her age and size this will be very difficult to overcome. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
