| Zylkene for anxiety Anyone's vet recommend Zylkene for anxiety? Maggie has severe separation anxiety (recently diagnosed with IBS due to stress). The vet said Zylkene could help. It can be taken daily, or, for on occasion for trips, moves, storms ,etc. She thought Maggie should be on it daily. Its a natural med derived from milk proteins, with the thought that pups are soothed and calm after they nurse. Its lactose free and does not have a drowsy effect. I am thinking of giving it a whirl but ofcorse wanted to check with my Yorkie parents first.

| I don't know if you can see this or not (if you want a copy let me know): Favorable results shown in this study when compared to traditional meds and side effects: http://www.sciencedirect.com.libezpr...58787807002031 Last edited by SirTeddykins; 06-25-2015 at 12:05 PM. |

Anyway, one study (above) shows that the side effects for this med are less than traditional meds but work just as well as far as anxiety. There was another study which led to this one but focused on anxiety in cats with similar conclusions. Might be worth a try since your vet recommended it.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It sounds like this could help your baby and if it were me, I wouldn't hesitate to try it if it seemed safe and if it seemed it could improve the quality of life.

Effects of alpha-casozepine (Zylkene) versus selegiline hydrochloride (Selgian, Anipryl) on anxiety disorders in dogs It's probably behind a paywall, but you can read the abstract. Zylkene sounds very promising for treating anxiety disorders in dogs. Here is another favorable article: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science...58787810000778 (Zylkene is the same as casein hydrolysate.) Last edited by pstinard; 06-26-2015 at 09:26 AM.

| I went ahead and bought a 30 day supply of Zylkene for $20 on amazon.com to see if it helps with Bella's mild anxiety (mainly excessive licking, and occasional whining or shaking). I'll let you all know how it worked at the end of a 30 day trial period. The product's ingredients are harmless--it's a question of whether or not it works. |

| Thank you for the research links and feedback everyone - I think I will indeed try it. Seems like it can't hurt, and if it helps her relax it will improved her life a ton. I love that she always wants to be close to me, but I I want her to feel secure and safe when I am away too. And with her sassy streak toward kids I just can't tote her everywhere. We have a week long trip coming up in Aug and I am totally stressing...I have the dog sitter reserved, but I a thinking about having a friend stay at my house instead so Maggie is atleast in her own home. But thats a convo for a different thread

| Bella and Zylkene I just finished a 30 day trial of having Bella on Zylkene to see if it would help with her hyperactivity and licking. At first, I hid the pill in a lump of cheese, but she eventually learned to eat the cheese and spit out the pill. Plus, I didn't want her to develop a cheese addiction . Then I realized that I could open up the capsule and pour the Zylkene powder into my hand, and Bella would eagerly lick it out of the palm of my hand. I tasted a little of the Zylkene myself, and it tasted just like milk powder, so I suppose that's why Bella likes the flavor. Unfortunately, Zylkene did NOTHING to change Bella's behavior--if anything, it encouraged her licking, since I had to allow her to lick it out of my hand. It might work for other dogs, or other conditions, but it didn't work for Bella at all. I might ask the vet about prescription medications the next time she goes in for a checkup. |
