| Can a puppy have allergies? When I first got Lexi she seemed a little itchy, but the vet didn't seem to think it was allergies because she was so young. She did say I could try Benadryl to see if it would help, but I never did it because the itching didn't seem to bother her too much and I didn't want her to be tired from the medicine. I have read that allergies, especially food allergies, usually don't start showing up until a dog is a little older. Does anyone on here have experience with a puppy, under 1 years old, having food and/or environmental allergies? Thanks! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Because of the immune system's maturity, it'd be very VERY rare for allergies to happen in puppies. However, it can happen, for whatever bizarre reasons. It would be more likely in a yorkie who is at least 6mths or older, as compared to a younger one. Food allergies are very rare, they only occur in about 10-15% of allergy cases. Enviro allergies are more common...ie dust, pollen, trees, grass etcetera. Benadryl rarely works in dog allergies, but I wouldn't worry about the tiredness if you wnat to try it as that will wear off. The issue w/ giving Ben is that you have to give it 4x a day as its half-life is so short. Rather, Vet Derms recommend using either Zyrtec or Claritin for dogs, as they only have to be given once every 24hrs....much more practical! For more thorough info on allergies, read this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html Where is the itching, btw? And what are you feeding?

| Hi! I had a Pekingese who had allergies terribly. I had to take him to a dermatogist and have all kinds of test run, then give him shots for them. Dogs don't usual have allergies nearly as bad as his were. My vet said she had never seen a dog have a case of them like he did. I would give your dog the Benedryl. One is only going to make him sleepy for part of the day. This way, if you find that it helps, your vet can give you something for them that will cost you less for your dog will probably have to stay on meds. |

Well, when I got her she had a couple hot spots and an ear infection which I know can be signs of allergies, but since that was cleared up they haven't come back. She itches everywhere, no one place in particular, but she doesn't lick or chew her paws. I'm not really concerned about food allergies, more environmental. She does sometimes sneeze right when we go out the door to go potty. And the licking and itching seem worse after being outside, but it doesn't seem to bother her too much. If I were you, I'd be trying either Zyrtec or Claritin - and btw, you do need to try any anti-histamine for at least 14 days prior to assessing its effectiveness. I'm attaching the dosage sheet given to me by my Vet Derm so that you have the correct dosages for these meds.

| It is funny because I just posted a familiar post. I had a dog years ago that had allergies to Rag weed. Every Sept he would scratch and he started at 6 months old so I would say yes it is possible for a puppy to have allergies. I have a new little girl and she itches and does this quick cough. So I wonder also if people that have dogs with allergies does yours cough too? Does Lexi cough<> |

Thank you for sending this to me. I ended up getting some Claritin instead. Yes, she was giving antibiotics for the ear infection and the skin infection.

Hi! Yes, Lexi does cough, but the vet thinks it could be collapsing trachea, however I have heard of coughing due to allergies. Who knows, maybe the Claritin may help with the coughing too.

I've had two yorkies with allergies. My first yorkie had skin allergy from pollen and my yorkie now has allergies which affect his eyes after running through freshly mown grass. I tend to keep him inside on high pollen days and he's better for it so I think, yes, your dogs can get allergies and they do seems to manifest young if they are particularly sensitive. That has been my experience anyway

| Thanks everyone for the replies. I will be starting the Claritin for 2 weeks starting tomorrow to see if there is any change. Who know, maybe the cough is allergy related. I never really made the connection between the 2 because I just thought it was CT based on what the vet said. If it works, great. If not, at least I can rule that out! |

| Sir Teddy does your dogs with allergies ever do the quick fast cough like they are clearing the throat. Sometimes after they drink water. I think she is also trying to see if the cough is related allergies. Some vets say dogs do cough due to allergies and some say no thats not possible. |

| I have tried wrapping the pills in almost everything. She is on to that and just spits it out. What does work for me is to show her her doggie treat and put it down in front of her. Then I stick the pill as far back in her mouth as I can get it and hold her muzzle and tell her she can have her treat when she swallows the pill. For some reson that seems to work. |
