4 month old Yorkie male diagnosed with mild liver shunt I was hoping to get some opinions on feeding your yorkies Blue Buffalo Puppy food? I am currently feeding JAX Royal Canine for Yorkshire terrier's, and since he was diagnosed with a mild liver shunt, he takes Lactolose twice a day. I thought maybe Blue Buffalo being All Natural and Holistic might be a better diet choice? He has not shown much for syptoms ( except for excessive digging on the couch now and then) for over a month now since giving medicine and cutting out extra protein in his diet.. I am looking into having an ultrasound and a consult to see if surgery is a good option. thanks, Wendy, JAX and Tiva

My friend found a liver shunt group on yahoo groups that gave her loads of support for her little guy. She went to the OVC got an appointment, they sedated him had CT and MRI done and when the vets located the shunt they repaired it right away and he is doing excellently. He has been on meds for a bit, slowly weaning off and she is making home made foods and slowly introducing proteins again under the guidance of her vet.

My sister gave us a Yorkie. After $500 in blood testing they told her he probably has liver shunt. So sadden by this. He's now 8 months old. He takes 1\2 pill at 8am and 8pm //// PLUS 1 mg liquid meds at same time. He can only have water and see ial dog food from sisters vet. We live in 2 different states too. Buddy is so loving and adorable. On disability I don't know what xray to get and how much it will be? I saw one !day got blood tests & ultrasound to find liver shunt. Above I read a CT and MRI. I don't wanna have him out done either. I just love him. I'm in Ohio and wonder if there's any organizations that help with xrays and possible surgery costs if he can be operated on? I feel bad all he can have is that same dog food, only water too! No bones, rawhides or anything else!

Yorkie and liver shunts Sorry to hear about your baby. I've read so much on this liver shunt. I was old buddy was really not eating, laying around, lethargic. I never heard my sister talk about all the systems so many others puppies and older dogs have had. But vet said according to blood test, their pretty sure he has liver shunt. Could you please tell me how much these xrays and surgery costs you. I'm on disability and I'm so freaking out at the thousands they say it will costs for xrays and possible surgery. Never had a dog with a diagnosis like this. Others say price for dog (it was my sisters), the 2 meds cost, $70 bag of dog food, then the fact they wanna do xrays, possible surgery, I should euthanize him. He's only 8 months old and is so full of life. I don't have the heart to do that!

| I don't know what you mean by a "mild" liver shunt. What tests have been done? If your vet suspects a shunt and has your pup on lactulose, he also needs to be on a liver diet!!

Today I found out my 2.5 yr old yorkie likely has liver shunt. He's been vomiting for the last month and meds and antibiotics were not working. After presenting a list of Max's symptoms to the vet, the next step was a blood chem. Monday we will have a bile test done. I've decided to manage this condition medically vs surgery. He just has not been himself and it's been hard to see the change. One day a vibrant young dog, then a lethargic, ill dog that seemed changed overnight. I feel for you and wish you the best in whatever route you take. I miss the old Maxwell and hope thus condition does not change him forever.

From this link: Medical Treatment of Portosystemic Shunts Over half of dogs treated with medical management alone are euthanized, usually within 10 months of diagnosis, because of uncontrollable neurologic signs and, in some cases, progressive hepatic fibrosis and subsequent portal hypertension. Surgery is therefore considered to be the treatment of choice for animals with congenital PSS.
