| it's a personal choice really, breeding females have a greater risk of cancers, but you don't want to spay too young, you want the dog to grow to it's fullest before spaying. You take away many of the hormones important to it's bone and joint growth in an early spay. There is a lot of research coming out on the benefits of not spaying. You just have to be a very responsible pet owner and not let them be doing any monkey business |

| YT Addict | I had my female spayed at five months. My vet recommended doing it before first heat. She was a very sweet girl and it did not change her personality. I know it is scary, but you will have her longer if you do it. My male was neutered at five months too. |

| YT 2000 Club Member | I just had my barely 3 lbs little girl spayed. She did awesome! She is 1 1/2 years old and had 2 heats before I was able to spay her. Get it done soon as she could come in heat at any time!

I believe that for most pet owners of females, a judicious timing of spaying is indicated; one that allows boney growth plate closure, and one that makes sure all the adult teeth/baby teeth can be dealt with. And that might often be after the first heat. Ideally options such as tubal ligation will become more available that will keep intact the necessary hormones. And yes more than a few studies show behavioural changes in spaying and or neutering your dog. Just be prepared. The average likelihood is that you would not encounter spay incontinence, nor fearfull behaviour after a spay, how-ever weight gain is relatively common.

| Size of the dog really has no bearing here as the physiology of dogs are the same. I recommend leaving it as long as possible at least 1-1 1/2 years. We are learning a lot these days thanks to Vets and Universities publishing these studies. My own vet says leave as long as you can and if you don't have to spay then no one is forcing you to, as long as you assume full responsibility for the dog. If it's a breeding female the risks of breast cancers are higher. |
