In this arena most studies for certain have been done on larger dogs than Yorkies. How-ever a reproduction system is pretty well constant across the board as are the endocrine systems, and generally speaking the boney growth plate closure.
I believe that for most pet owners of females, a judicious timing of spaying is indicated; one that allows boney growth plate closure, and one that makes sure all the adult teeth/baby teeth can be dealt with. And that might often be after the first heat.
Ideally options such as tubal ligation will become more available that will keep intact the necessary hormones.
And yes more than a few studies show behavioural changes in spaying and or neutering your dog. Just be prepared. The average likelihood is that you would not encounter spay incontinence, nor fearfull behaviour after a spay, how-ever weight gain is relatively common.
