| Charlies Itchies Hello Everyone! My name is Charlie and my Mum adopted me from a shelter 4 years ago. They estimated that I am 7 years old. Ever since my Mum adopted me I have had horrible skin allergies. I swear I spend most of my life in a tub of water with one shampoo after another. I am now on Butler Schein Antiseborrheic Shampoo at $30 a bottle! The vet also decided to put me on Science Diet ZD for $33 a bag! I have been on this since Christmas of 2013. Mum has to use a hammer and towel to break up the kibble because it is to big for me. The vet gave me prednisone pills and I felt so much better and stopped itching but this is not good for my liver. (short term solution) Mum only lets me outside just long enough for me to do my business. I am on Trifexis for fleas as well. I seem to be only a little better. I don't smell as bad but I am still scratching until raw and all my hair on my sides is just about gone. I know my Mum is trying really hard to find the solution to the problem so I told her to ask questions here and maybe get some good advice. She is really sad and I feel bad that I can't get better. Thanks! Charlie |

YT 3000 Club Member | welcome to yt, did they test him for what her is allergic to, is it enviromential allergies or some thing else. chester has the enviromential allergies and fish oil is good for allergies, and I would think a different food might help, alot of science diet is corn and byproducts which is not good for itchy dogs. I use no scent in my laundry soap, use no dryer sheets, and I dont use any scents or plug ins or carpet freshner. I use vinegar and water for my laminate floor, vacum alot, and use a air cleaners, there is a med called atopia or something like that which is used for allergies. Good luck |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Aw, poor Charlie. Allergies are complex and extremely frustrating. Most allergies in dogs are enviro - only 10-15% of allergies are due to food. For year round allergies options are: Antihistamines, Temaril P (not best option), Steroids (ditto), Atopica, Apoquel, allergy testing and treatment For seasonal allergies: antihistamines, Temaril P, steroids Here is thread that goes into good detail about allergies: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html

| Hey there itchy Charlie, ask your mum how she feels about switching to a raw diet. I've seen with my friends dogs massive changes from changing from kibble to raw. I also have a friend who runs a rescue, she only feeds raw because she saw a much speedier recovery rate in her dogs and insists adoptive parents continue this practice when they take their dogs home. There are a lot of raw feeders and home cookers on here who could guide you, if that interests you. The problem with steroids such as prednisone is they shut down your immune system and give a quick fix. You would want a solution that remedies the problem from where the allergies are stemming. Ask your mum if the vet took blood work and checked all your organ functions too. Often that can be the issue. Digestive upset too can lead to allergies, so how about you say hey mum can I have a wee bit of plain greek yoghurt or a probiotic with my food. When my boys get itchy I rinse them down with 50/50 organic apple cider vinegar and filtered water and rub it into the skin and coat. They smell just like salad |
