| Need help with heartwork and flea meds I think I posted to the wrong forum...so here is a repost... Which brand of Heartworm and Flea meds do most use? My puppy gets sick every time I put the stuff on her back...she's listless for a couple of days. Also, heartworm meds- best product. I want the 1-10 lb brands but my vet keeps suggesting the other up to 26 lbs ( makes no sense to me ) . HELP? Also...vaccinations. I said no to Lepto and my vet was furious. Brought two other vets in to convince me. I need some help/opinions. |

YT 2000 Club Member | I use Heartgard Plus for all my pups who weigh between 3 - 6 pound and have no issues. As far as flea/tic control we use Frontline. I have my vet measure it out according to their weight, so they are not over medicated. My almost 3 pounder never has had a reaction to either of these medications!

| I'm not certain what you mean by your vet measuring it out... the Frontline comes in a clippable pouch to apply. |

| The flea preventatives can be split, but the heartworm cannot -- otherwise it won't be effective.

YT 2000 Club Member | My vet will measure the amount according to each dogs weight. I vile is opened and the correct dose is put in a needle free syringe and applied to that dog. Last year, we got 4 doses out of 1 vile of 25 pounds and under. It treated a 20 lb cocker spaniel, and 3 yorkies. None of them ever had fleas or tics. We only use it during the summer, as our winters are cold. Our little yorkie only gets a couple of drops.

| We use heartguard and Advantix. Is Lepto a problem in your area?

| Revolution covers both heartworms and fleas. Bella hasn't had any side effects at all, other than temporary itching right after it's applied. She's over that in about five minutes. |

| Up to 25 pounds is okay. Heartgard is a good drug. What some people don't realize is that Interceptor/Sentinel with the 2-10 pound dosing is actually also an 'overdose'. 1/5 of the dose would he adequate for heartworms. The other 4/5 is added for intestinal parasites. Point is that both drugs are technically given in excess. Sentinel year-round here and Frontline or Advantage if needed. We don't have a tick problem. If a vet brought two colleagues in to try and talk me in to giving a vaccine (except rabies) I would leave.

| A-ha,..I'll gladly help you as I found out from trial & error. The best & easiest way to go is to treat it from the inside out. I give both my dogs a small pill Trifexis after a meal that's good for 1 month. It is not cheap, however the good news is that you can find them online without a prescription & about 40% less expensive. So starting about in May when summer arrives I give them 1 tablet once a month from May-Sept and wha-la...no more scratching and licking their butts. I've never looked back on those messy topical treatments ever again thank god. |
