| The boys are scheduled for their dentals~Questions!! Ok...so I did it. I scheduled the boys dentals for monday...and they will be getting the works(nail trims, anal glands, and shots) while they are under. I took Prince, my 10 year old, to this vet almost 2 years ago for his dental and he did well. Both my mom and his prior owner used this vet. Here is my thing...At 2.5 years old, this is Ricky's first time being under anesthesia while with me. I know Prince's history, but I do not know Ricky's. I called the vet that his rescue uses because he was put under there for a neuter and to get his baby teeth pulled. The lady at the front desk said that if there were any problems, the lady who adopted him to me would have told me...and that also, that they have a shot that will bring them out of anesthesia immediately if there are any problems. I also talked to the vet he will be going to and they said they could run a pre-anesthesia panel on Ricky before putting him under.(Prince just had lots of blood work done on him) I also asked if they used IV fluids during their dentals and they said no. I've read that some other vet clinics use IV fluids for dentals though...although the vet I used to work for never used them. Should I request fluids?? I have no problem paying extra for it if it's necessary!! Also...should I request pain meds after the surgery?? Do they give them pain meds there or do they send them home with you?? Last time, they gave me antibiotics and that was it. I am VERY nervous putting both of my boys under but I know dental cleanings are essential, ESPECIALLY in yorkies!! I would just be devastated if anything happened to my boys though.... Last edited by theporkieyorkie; 02-04-2014 at 09:21 AM. |

| I would definitely never allow a dental without fluids being run. My two year old has an iv catheter placed and iv fluids and he's only two. My dogs have been sent home with pain meds after extractions. BTW there is no need to express anal glands unless there is a problem.

| I would not do it without fluids and I would not get shots done at the same time.

| One of the reasons about having the IV already placed is if something happens and the dog needs medicine ASAP they don't have to take the time to find the vein and put the IV in which could waste valuable time in an emergency.

| Until you said something Taylor, I didn't even think about the danger of doing shots and surgery at the same time...I was just thinking about sparing them the pain of a poke while they were awake...but if they have a bad reaction to the vaccine while they are under, that could be very bad!! |

| Fluids are needed to keep the animal hydrated and maintain blood pressure before, during, and after the procedure.

| In addition to requiring fluids to be run, I won't use a vet who does not have a designated person sitting there monitoring my dog's vitals during the procedure. Fluids running without someone monitoring the vitals is useless I would think.

| I dropped the boys off this morning for their dentals. I am so nervous. I asked for fluids and a pre op blood screen on my little guy. My older one just had his blood work done. The vet also called me to tell me that Prince will be getting some of his canine teeth pulled out so I am sure his tongue will now hang out of his mouth. It's been almost 2 years since his last dental...but if u looked at his teeth, you'd think he never had one. I am pretty upset about him loosing his canines. Poor little guy....i hope his mouth at least feels better. |

Sorry to hear Prince is losing some teeth. His tongue may not necessarily hang out. Looking forward to hearing they are back home with you.

| If he's getting teeth pulled, it's most likely the very back small molars...those are hard to clean bc it's hiding behind the larger incisors & it's hard to reach while brushing. My vet calls it 'the valley behind the hills'...so when I brush their teeth, I open their mouth all the way & stick the toothbrush back there. Momo won't let me, so he lost 3 small molars back there (I always end up saying this when I mention Momo's teeth!). Going to get some loofa gloves & cut the fingers & use that to clean his teeth. Doodlebug suggested it, Thank you! Hope they both do well!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | YES, get fluids - ALWAYS get fluids when they're under. It's not a short cut you want to take. YES, get pain meds if pain is expected - AND always ask what you're supposed to do if the pain isn't getting relief. Personally, I would not ever get shots while my babies are under - it's not needed since shots are pretty painless, and it's way too dangerous in my opinion. Great questions, btw!

| Yup, def do shots @ a different time & day...If they have an adverse reaction, it would be hard to tell if it's the anesthesia wearing off, making them lethargic or the vaccines.
