The boys are scheduled for their dentals~Questions!! Ok...so I did it. I scheduled the boys dentals for monday...and they will be getting the works(nail trims, anal glands, and shots) while they are under.
I took Prince, my 10 year old, to this vet almost 2 years ago for his dental and he did well. Both my mom and his prior owner used this vet.
Here is my thing...At 2.5 years old, this is Ricky's first time being under anesthesia while with me. I know Prince's history, but I do not know Ricky's. I called the vet that his rescue uses because he was put under there for a neuter and to get his baby teeth pulled. The lady at the front desk said that if there were any problems, the lady who adopted him to me would have told me...and that also, that they have a shot that will bring them out of anesthesia immediately if there are any problems.
I also talked to the vet he will be going to and they said they could run a pre-anesthesia panel on Ricky before putting him under.(Prince just had lots of blood work done on him) I also asked if they used IV fluids during their dentals and they said no. I've read that some other vet clinics use IV fluids for dentals though...although the vet I used to work for never used them.
Should I request fluids?? I have no problem paying extra for it if it's necessary!!
Also...should I request pain meds after the surgery?? Do they give them pain meds there or do they send them home with you?? Last time, they gave me antibiotics and that was it.
I am VERY nervous putting both of my boys under but I know dental cleanings are essential, ESPECIALLY in yorkies!! I would just be devastated if anything happened to my boys though....
