| Crust on my puppies bum? (graphic pictures) *Graphic pictures, hit the back button if you don't want to see the pictures* I am taking her to the vet asap, soonest appointment possible even if this isn't serious. But I'm wondering what this even is that she has on her bum?? I've tried cleaning it but it won't come off and I don't want to clean it too hard or too much. It looks very swollen as well. |

| Poor girl. Looks like she could have an anal sac abscess/rupture. Call your vet's office first thing in the morning and tell them she needs to see the doctor ASAP. Keep us updated.

| Good to hear. I don't want to scare you, but this is something that needs to be seen tomorrow, so don't let the vet's office put you off a day. If I recall correctly, an oral antibiotic is prescribed and possibly a topical.

I will get her in tomorrow (well, today) for sure. I know it is very serious. Could this have been prevented though? Is it my fault that this happened? | |

YT 3000 Club Member | little dogs can have anal glands issues, has she been dragging her butt on the floor or biting at her butt, thoses are usually signs, sometimes higher fiber in your food can help, at least 4% or so |

| As chestermama wrote, anal glands are a common problem and scooting and licking are usually signs that the glands are full. Some dogs express their glands naturally, others need to have them done manually. There are many causes for abscess including infection. Max had a brief problem when he was a pup and a vet manually retrieved a stool sample. I fed Max a few peas with dinner to give more bulk to his stool to express the glands. If stool is too soft or too small, it may not express the glands naturally. My boys tend to express when they do their business on walks. Fiber can be helpful, but be careful adding too much fiber which can cause other problems. Many people learn to manually express their dog's glands, or bring them to the groomer or vet to have it done.

| I agree.....my Lola had this happen but it was much larger and very painful for her. Now when we she her scoot its to the vet for her anal sac expression. I don't ever want her to go through that again.. sending prayers all is ok.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Poor kiddo...good job on catching it though, and glad you're going to the vet. Hopefully, it's just an anal sac issue or a very angry hemorrhoid (which I doubt, but ya never know).

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I agree insist she has to be seen today. It is very painful for them. They should be able to get her taken care of.

| Im glad I read this because I had never heard of any of this type of problem before , nor about expressing the anal sac? this is new to me. So now i have learned something and know yet another thing to watch for with my babies. Im not glad your baby is going through this at all, but I am glad since she is, that you posted this so myself and others can learn from it. I hope your girl gets better sooner rather then later. poor thing. please keep us updated. |

| Went to the vet today. The vet scrubbed off the brown crusty stuff so I'm sure that makes Miss M (my puppy) feel a lot better. She is on antibiotics for the next 7-10 days. The vet thinks it is a gland that is irritated/swollen and said the liquid that came out when she relieved the gland was a little off-color for some reason but the vet didn't seem too concerned about that. So we will see when I go back for the recheck in 10 days. Hopefully it isn't too serious and the antibiotics help. |

| And now my puppys breeder is saying that when I took her to the groomer 6 months ago, they must have popped the gland without even telling me or asking first. So now I will have to pop the gland every month thanks to the groomers. |

| Happy to hear that she has antibiotics and is feeling better. The glands may fill up quickly again, so if you see additional swelling or discomfort, you may have to stop by the vet before the recheck to have her glands manually expressed. Don't give up hope that your pup may be able to do it on her own. If she doesn't appear to have any problems, I would instruct the groomer not to do it ever again.
