![]() Yes, you can have your vet show you how to empty the glands. It is good to know how if necessary.

Like Kristin, I groom mine at home bc I don't trust groomers to treat my dogs the way I think they should be treated.

| When I take my Maltese to the groomer the cleaning of the anals is standard procedure. I never thought anything about it until this thread. He only goes about 3 or 4 times per year. We haven't had any anal gland problems in between the grooming. Zoey has never been to the groomer (as anyone can tell from looking at her home hair trims) and we have no anal problems either. I guess if I ever do take her I would have to tell them not to express her glands. Good info in this thread. Hope your baby girl recovers soon.

| You can feel the anal glands. If it feels hard & full, they need to be expressed. If not, it can abscess & get infected. Groomers are trained to feel the anal glands & express them if needed (if they got the proper training). Sometimes they squeeze them (not pop them loll) even if they don't need to be. That's when it poses a problem. Your vet can express them too, internally is best. I have 3 that do not need theirs' expressed. I had to express Mimi's every 2-3 weeks but not anymore. I stopped giving them anything chicken & her glands stopped filling up. She also doesn't do well w/fish based kibbles. Now they're off kibble & doing excellent on premade raw food & canned food. I haven't had to express Mimi in awhile!

| Miss M is doing good on the antibiotics. The swelling has gone down and her bum bum is back to normal. Hopefully my vet will have some info on how to prevent this or something I can do so I don't have to go to the vet every month |
