| Who expresses your Yorkie's anal glands? I do Baby's externally. She needs them done about every month. I used to go to the vet, but he charges $35 and the groomers around here don't do it! So I taught myself how to do it! What about you?

| I have been lucky Bogie has never needed his done and Jada just had to have hers done last month. My DIL is a vet tech, but she wasn't available to me the day Jada started biting at her bum and scooting. I took her in and let the vet do it. I hope she doesn't have to have it done again.

| It's pretty darn stinky! Smells fishy! I always do it when I'm giving her a bath so the stinky goes down the drain!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I actually don't want it to be done unless they need it.

| So have yours needed it? Who did it? Baby's get full once a month. Not only does she scoot, I can smell it, her hiney hole puckers, and I can feel the glands full. I'd say that warrants an emptying.

| My Gina was 11 when she passed and never had it done. I understand if the poops are solid enough the anals get expressed by themselves. My Zoey is 2 now and she has never had it done. Cherie

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yes, I agree with you. The vet showed me how to do it and his groomer has done it, but it should only be done when it actually is full. Otherwise, they never learn to empty them, and if you do it wrong you can push the contents further up. If they are scooting, or the area looks puffy, you can do it, as long as you know how. I think you can take a dog who has always emptied them on his own; start emptying them for him, and you can make that dog dependent on you emptying his glands, for he will no longer do it. The glands actually are supposed to be used as a scent marker to give other dogs information, and some people say if a dog poops outside, it’s more likely to empty the glands on it’s own. The reason why many groomers have stopped this is because it's better if the dog does it on it's own, but again, you don't want them to get too full either.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Glad you posted, this is true of many dogs, and if a groomer started emptying them, the dogs would then need help. I do think it's wise to look at the area before baths just to make sure they never do get too puffy.

| I wish she never had to have it done in the first place. The first time she leaked this stinky fishy stuff on my mom's leg. When I looked it up online it said anal glands. Took her to vet and vet was like OMG they were soooooooo full. Then it started happening where I had to get them expressed every so often. Vet tried to teach me internally, but that wasn't happening! So I taught myself externally. She does express some by herself bc I can see the wetness and smell, but never enough. O well. I don't think it's nasty anymore. It's just part of the bathing process haha
