Im kinda in the same boat as you Stormchaser, only my 2 month old Ranger weighs 4 lbs. He went to the vet today for his 2nd set of shots and she said he's healthy and not over weight. I've read that you can tell a dog is over weight when you can barely or no longer feel their ribcage in the belly area. Hope that helps some!! Here's a website that's not specific to any breed: http://www.placervillevet.com/canine...0condition.htm ~Danea

I wouldn't worry too awfully much about puppy weight UNLESS your puppy is very obviously overweight. I've never seen a truly overweight puppy. They grow so fast and one week they look cute and chubby and the next they look messy and skinny and then back to looking a bit chubby again. Puppies are especially active -- they should have active play three or more times a day that causes them to pant -- and that babyfat quickly turns to healthy muscle. The time to be more concerned about weight gain is after neutering or after they are a year or so old. Through the years, I have noticed that when my Pogo* (almost 13) would gain weight, and I got honest with myself, it was the extra little "treats" we gave him that socked those extra pounds on him. When I cut those out, he became slim and svelte again. This past year Pogo has kind of "hit the wall" with aging and it's very hard to see him slow down so much. I suppose it was gradual, though to me it has seemed to happen fast. He really can't do his 2 mile walks with Don any more and his less active life style put on a couple of pounds. But lately he hasn't been eating as much, and we have been keeping track of the "extras" and he is lookin' pretty good for an old fella. *Pogo is my beloved Doodle Dog -- half Dachshund/half Poodle -- and the smartest, most wonderful creature God has ever made.

Yeah, usually littles ones aren't going to be overweight. I don't think you can really say what a baby's weight will be based on their parents. Yoda is about 7 lbs, and his parents were 5-6 I believe. Just depends... :P

Hi I read somewhere that baby food is bad for puppies and dogs... Some of it has onion powder in it and can cause problems. Just a thought. Sorry your baby isn't feeling well.

When I first got my puppy 12 weeks old, 1 lb. 5 oz., my friend/breeder and I took three puppies to the vet for shots. Two litter mates tested positive, mine (runt of the litter) negetive. However , the vet gave mine the same medication as the others. Can't remember what it was---2 kinds one yellow--must have been butterscotch--she loved it--- to give in the morning. The other was white, to give at night--had to hold her down to give it. Gave both meds for 14 days with live culture yogurt. Those puppies did not look or act sick---tootie roll poop.
