I wouldn't worry too awfully much about puppy weight UNLESS your puppy is very obviously overweight. I've never seen a truly overweight puppy. They grow so fast and one week they look cute and chubby and the next they look messy and skinny and then back to looking a bit chubby again. Puppies are especially active -- they should have active play three or more times a day that causes them to pant -- and that babyfat quickly turns to healthy muscle.
The time to be more concerned about weight gain is after neutering or after they are a year or so old. Through the years, I have noticed that when my Pogo* (almost 13) would gain weight, and I got honest with myself, it was the extra little "treats" we gave him that socked those extra pounds on him. When I cut those out, he became slim and svelte again. This past year Pogo has kind of "hit the wall" with aging and it's very hard to see him slow down so much. I suppose it was gradual, though to me it has seemed to happen fast. He really can't do his 2 mile walks with Don any more and his less active life style put on a couple of pounds. But lately he hasn't been eating as much, and we have been keeping track of the "extras" and he is lookin' pretty good for an old fella.
