I have done some searching on the collapsed trachea vs reverse sneezing etc. I've seen quite a number of youtube videos on explanations and just people posting videos of their doggies with the reverse sneeze. To me, this sounds like honking, versus when a CT makes the dogs gag a lot and hack and whatnot.

Lolli does this honking, it's like she gasps through her nose and it makes a honk noise, and you really get a sense of it being dry in there. She doesn't do this until about this time of year but she's kinda been doing it a lot, 3 times in the last 2 days and I've never seen her like this. We are from FL so we don't get much dry weather, maybe a couple weeks out of the year there. But up here in GA it's started already and though it will get warm again, we'll still continue to get dryer colder weather.

I'm wondering what can I do to help this? Would a humidifier help do you think? She gets so freaked out by these episodes and they only really last about a minute or less but it just kinda seems excessive at the moment. It is just at the same time as this really big cold snap here, from 70s to 36 this morning. I just want to help her be comfortable!

I thought Callie was just reverse sneezing and finally had to take her to the vet and just by feeling around they found her trachea was irritated and diagnosed her with CT.

Trust me that if you ever hear the honking of a CT pup you will know that it sounds like nothing else. What I will say is that all CT pups do not have that classic honk. Also, in reverse sneeze, they are breathing in and out...not quite the same in CT. They don't have that air exchange and you don't see the ribs expanding and all...

As for reverse sneeze, I have pups who do that but they don't "freak out" as you are describing. Matter of fact, I have never had a pup freak out from CT really. They often are too sick.

I suggest you video one of these episodes for your vet to see. Then perhaps you can find out for sure what is going on.

Buster has episodes of reverse breathing. When he starts up I lift his back legs up so he tilts forward and it usually stops the reverse breathing. Sometimes the back leg trick does not work and I have to lift his front legs to get it to stop, you have to interrupt the cycle. For me this works better than covering his nose.

I gently rub her neck and nose and it usually stops. She doesn't cough or hack at all, it's her breathing in that makes the honk noise, you can hear the air going in. I think she just gets dry in her nose or something and maybe it causes this. It kinda sounds dry like that. Is that possible?

It sounds very much like a reverse sneeze to me...but you really should show your vet.

I never in thought about watching there ribs but that I think would be one good way you might could tell.
