| Skin Darkening - 2nd time happening Hi, my yorkie Bella's skin is darkening for the second time. Bella is normally an inside dog but visiting my aunts house for the 2nd time where the majority of her day is spent outdoors, her skin in darkening to a greyish/blue color. I just noticed the change in color yesterday and in both instances it's taken about 5 days to turn darker. The first time this occured was approximately 6 months ago. Bella is now 18 months old. It took a couple of months the first time for her belly/skin to be the pinkish color it is normally. Could it simply be the outdoor elements that would cause this? I have caught her drinking water from the plate at the bottom of a large potted plant in my aunts yard. She is normally in my apartment so grass, dirt, plants, etc. are not her norm. Any advise? |

| If she has been outside in the sun, she could just be getting a tan. Really. I used to have a pink-nosed yellow lab and in the summer his nose would turn black from being in the sun.

| I just thought of the "blue man" who died recently. He used a silver type of treatment. I doubt this is it, but it's possible that it's something she is ingesting. I think the tan theory however makes a lot more sense.

| I didn't realize the blue man had died. He ingested a bunch of silver daily for a very extended period of time, causing his skin to turn blue. I don't know that a short term ingestion of something would be able to change Bella's color without her having other symptoms such as vomiting or weird colored poo or urine, but it is an interesting thought.

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. My Max's skin on his back is darker and appears to have an almost bluish tint like his dark saddle hair. I think it has something to do with his hair, kind of like human scalps can appear different colors depending on hair color/type. Teddy has light pink skin everywhere, and he is lighter haired in general. It is interesting that your baby's belly is turning this color. Is it only in the hairy areas of her underside, or the hairless parts too?

| I have a Morkie & this happened to her too. In fact, he skin darkened in so many splotchy areas that she kind of looked like a cow under her hair. Her name is Momo & we called her "Moo Moo". It is normal with certain breeds of dogs. It hasn't happened to my purebred Yorkies, but Maltese have things called "black points" around the eyes, ears, nose, mouth & paws where the skin pigment turns black. Other areas, like the tummy, thighs or back can become grey or blueish. It is completely normal (even desired when showing Maltese) & the pigment tends to fade in and out in phases. They do get darker in the sun as well. You could visit your vet if it makes you more comfortable, but I wouldn't worry too much.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Alfie's skin has darkened to almost black (well very dark grey, looks dirty but he is clean) and lightened up again. Both testicles were black at one stage but now only half of one is black. He attends a dermatologist regularly for his allergies and I have asked about it but she isn't worried at all and says that a dog's skin will pigment at various times. I think it is probably also related to their changing coat pigments, just my opinion though I have no expertise. However, I have also read that some darkened skin pigmentation can be indicative of some serious conditions so I would definitely be discussing any changes with my vet just to be sure.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I also just remembered that when Alfie scratches his skin and makes himself raw the hair in that area darkens, he has a very light coloured coat with very little tan but in a grey area that has had an abrasion his coat will turn tan. Strange, but true.
