| Routine vitals... So the LS thread got me thinking, it seems a good amount of us get blood work done regularly so when something goes a miss we can catch it fairly quickly. What if we did vitals on a regular basis as well? You normally only see your vet once or twice a year where they check the vitals. Do you think we could detect disease sooner by regularly checking their temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate? Say you go to your vet every 6 months, a lot can happen in that amount of time. What if in between that 6 months you are regularly checking their vitals and find something to be consistently off. Perhaps you could be detecting a serious disease or problem sooner? Any thoughts?

| I think I do that unconsciously, lol. I mean, if one is panting, are they hot? I check the room temp, notice tongue and gum color, feel the ears and feet to check body temperature quickly, put a hand on their chest to check for slow/fast heartbeat. Glance at the eyes for redness, bulging, etc. Are they resting or just get done playing or running around? Are they alert? Is this normal for this dog? If not, then we go to the vet. I am also sure to check body weight and condition at least weekly. Need to know if they may be losing/gaining weight.

| I do it just as a habit too. If they seem at all off I check gums. I can feel their hearts when they are close. I will count resps if something seems off. I check mammary tissue with the girl. I feel for lumps. It is just a part of life for us.

| Teehee...I tried last month to see if my O2 saturation finger probe (that also tells heartrate) would work on Huey's nub tail since it is kinda finger-like, but it wouldn't...

| Really??? Didn't consider either of those. I did try his foot, unsuccessfully. I can see where the tongue might be successful, since I think the tail failed due to hair...and the tongue is really vascular... Thanks for the ideas

| I always check Callie's gums and temp if she is acting off or if she feels like she has a temp I check it too.
