I think I do that unconsciously, lol. I mean, if one is panting, are they hot? I check the room temp, notice tongue and gum color, feel the ears and feet to check body temperature quickly, put a hand on their chest to check for slow/fast heartbeat. Glance at the eyes for redness, bulging, etc. Are they resting or just get done playing or running around? Are they alert? Is this normal for this dog? If not, then we go to the vet.

I am also sure to check body weight and condition at least weekly. Need to know if they may be losing/gaining weight.
