| Help! - Puppy Food! Hey! I just got my yorkie baby this weekend. She is 8 weeks old and only weighs about a pound. My breeder told me to feed her Purina Puppy Chow but it takes her forever to eat this. I think she struggles chewing it, I even catch her swallowing pieces whole sometimes. We started mixing a tad bit of wet food with it to see if it helps but she still struggles! Any suggestions? Also, she tends to take a bite of food and then run away to eat it and then grabs another bite. She does this over and over again. Is it just because she's used to maybe fighting for food when she was with her littermates?

| Have you tried soaking the kibble in hot water to make it soft & give it to her when it cools down? She needs to be eating & often, 3-4 x's a day. I always sit w/my dogs until they finish their food, maybe sitting next to her while she eats will help her? Or even offering her the food w/your hand? Do you have any nutri-cal or karo syrup to help keep her sugar level up?

| my breeder told me when I got pixie to grind the kibble up in a food processor or blender and add water to it. Also you could add a little wet food to her diet about 1/2 tsp is what I did. Congrats on your new Baby

| Yorkiemom1 is really good at this, I copied and pasted this from Yorkiemom1 “You can take about a tablespoonful of Gerber baby chicken, add about 2 tablespoons of hot water and mix it up and pour it over a little of the kibble....you are softening the kibble and you are adding a surprise of chicken "sauce", which most of them love! Give baby a couple more weeks to get an appetite for dry kibble....” Just make sure the baby food doesnt have onion/ garlic

| My pups also have a habit of taking one piece of kibble & running away with it under the dining room table or something. I don't know why they do it Maybe you can try giving her a canned puppy food? She might like that better & it might be easier for her to eat. You can also soak the kibble in the fridge overnight. It softens it right up. Congrats on your new baby!

| When we brought Princess Sophie home she was a very slow eater as well. For a while she wouldn't eat out of her bowl so I hand fed her for a time. I think when they are very little, they need to be coaxed. We always had dry kibble available and 3 times/day we added some canned and some chicken to the dry with a little water. I personally would stay away from Purina food of any kind. They don't have a good reputation with anyone except those who really don't know a lot about good dog food. I mean no disrespect to your breeder as ours was doing the exact same thing and adding rice cereal (a real no-no) to make her gain weight. It's just that some breeders aren't as up to snuff about food as other YT'ers. There are several really good dog foods out there and you want your pup to have a good healthy start. I would recommend checking out threads with information about dog foods. That will help you and your pup! Good luck and congrats on your new addition to your family!!!
