| surgical removal of anal glands My Puff baby just turned 1. For several months I have been taking her to the vet to get her anal glands expressed. Lately she needs to go in more frequently-every 5-7 days. I had a consultation with the surgeon today and she said that Puff certainly would be a candidate for the surgery. Has anybody here faced this? Before I can make a decision about this i need to do a lot of research. Do you guys know of any options to the surgery? I appreciate any suggestions. |

| If stool is firm and it is still happening, then yes, I would seriously consider it. Fecal incontinence is a concern. Just use an experienced surgeon.

| A premium, high fiber diet helps in most instances. What food is she eating? Also one can increase fiber content by adding green beans or canned pumpkin to the food or given as treats inbetween meals, or both ways.

| please tell me... Her stools have always been firm and normal looking. I have tried canned pumpkin and have her on Natural Balance Synergy to see if that helps. Surgery seems so drastic. Would learning how to empty the glands myself be an option? I really need some input from other mommies! |

| I have an older wheaten terrier that had awful gland problems. We got caught in a bad chicken food recall some years back and I had to put her on an ID diet from the vet- the anal gland problem cleared up! I fed her fish, rice and green beans for a while. I now have her (and the two yorkies) on a fish protein only- no grain kibble with lots of probiotics and digestive enzymes. Lucy has not had her glands expressed in years and the yorkies never. Good luck! |

| They are on Earthborn Holistics- Coastal Catch. Before the last recall they ate Taste of the Wild- Pacific Stream. They did well on one of the Canadae foods- it has a lot of probiotics. They loved the Fromm, but it was expensive(I'm feeding a rather large dog along with the two yorkies)and Ziva gained a terrible amount of weight on it. We also have to be very careful that Lucy has no processed people food or dog treats except for fruits and veggies! |

Surgery does seem drastic for her age. I like to think they will grow out of it or eventually you will find something that works for her. Learning how to do it yourself is a definite option, it's not hard to do at all.

| If you decide to do this, be absolutely certain to use a board certified soft tissue surgeon...and even with one of them ask a LOT of questions. Surgery in that area is extremely touchy....there are a lot of nerve endings and a dog can easily end up incontinent if something goes wrong. I would be inclined to find other solutions if it were my pup.

| Anal Gland issues are often caused by allergies, I would try a diet change before considering surgery. |

| She's just a puppy so surgery is out the question. But thank you so much for the advice. I'm going to stop the Orijen and transition her when she's older on another diet. |
