| natural calming remedy My vet recommended I try a natural calming remedy for my pup Stanley. He was not properly socalized before we adopted him, and is very nervous and fearful around strangers. He gets so anxious that trying to expose him to new places & people feels like torture. Our vet thinks it might help to give him a calming remedy on a daily basis. I have tried Rescue Remedy, and it does seem to help a bit. I'm having a hard time giving him the 4 drops though... it's very hard to give the right amount with that glass dropper. I'm never sure if i'm giving too much or too little. I'm wondering if anyone has had good results with any other natural product? Hopefully NOT in liquid form. I appreciate any advice or ideas.

| Natural calming remedy? Not sure of what was recommended to you, but understand that if a baby yorkie is separated from it's mother/siblings too early, those types of problems can/may exist. This is what I've learned and I have not been wrong yet... Yorkies are extremely intelligent and can learn lots from repetition. I suggest getting him acclimated to new places first. Get him/her to a new place slowly without humans so they get use to being in new surroundings. I'd do this daily. After a while they get use to being somewhere new without the stressful hardship of the anxiety, etc. After they get use to this, get them where people are, but from a distance... like maybe 30 yards or more away. After a while they get to see humans, but feel some sort of security they are far enough away to not be a harm. Soon you'll see a curiosity in them about those "humans" from a distance. Talk in a calming voice helps. When you start to see this, get them closer. Each time you go out, get them closer. Soon you'll be right among the people and the baby will get braver and use to seeing the new surroundings and "humans". From there contact can be slowly brought in from strangers. If it were me, I'd do this over a 3 week time period. Always be close as you're their security! Matthias |

| He's 2 1/2. He's been with us since he was about a year old. I've been trying to socialize him slowly, but it's not working because he gets so stressed and anxious.

| Poor Stanley. I agree with Matthias' training advice. Does Stanley do obedience tricks like sit and others? You could take some really yummy treats and try to focus him on performing for treats. Do it sort of far away from people and in an area where he is comfortable. Or is he nervous anywhere outdoors? I would also enlist friends to work with you on training. It can be hard working around strangers who want to run up and pet or hug your cute dog. Have the friend stand at a distance and ignore Stanley. Then have the friend move closer over time and do walk bys, all while ignoring Stanley. You can encourage him to walk closer to your friend using treats or toys as lures and rewards for moving closer. Most of all, remain confident and upbeat yourself, but calm and not overly talkative and animated. If you are anxious about Stanley being nervous, he will sense it and think there is danger. How does he do with other dogs? Is there a doggy friend who might make him feel more relaxed outdoors?

| A Thundershirt might help, but be careful with it in hot weather. It is like wearing a jacket, which we have used it for. A simple tshirt might also have a calming effect.

I had some drops to give one of my boys and he was NOT having any part of it! I put the drops on a little square of bread, then I took a little pimiento cheese on the bread, and he thought he had died and gone to heaven! I have since used that trick and just used Miracle Whip on the bread to hide the drops! Works super! If he wont go there, make a little chicken salad and use THAT on the bread! I have even used a piece of thin sliced deli turkey Carl Buddig meats in a package.....put the drops on the bread, put a little Miracle Whip, put the little square of deli meat and then roll or fold the piece of bread over so he doesnt taste the drops if it goes thru the piece of bread.....I give everything, all meds, like this now... | |

| Does he go for walks every day? If yes, how does he act walking? If no, start there as it's a great bonding exercise.

| Thanks for all the responses. I will definetely try the bread idea! We adopted Stanley when he was almost a year old. He's 2 1/2 now. I've been trying to slowly socialize him, but he gets so stressed out he just shuts down. I do try to walk him daily, but usually only in the evening because he's small & cute so people tend to "rush" him when they see him. I personally alway ask if it's OK before petting a strange dog, but many people don't. I've had several bad experiences where he was really freaked out by strangers reaching for him before I could stop them. I feel like I've made lots of progress getting him used to being in new places (with no people around), but it's time to start going to populated places (slowly of course). My vet recommended using a natural calming remedy to make it less stressful & scary for him. The only one I know of is Rescue Remedy, but I really don't like the liquid form. I plan on trying the bread idea, but would still be interested in hearing of anyones experiences with other products.

I haven't tried it with my own dogs, so I can't share any personal experience with it. I can relate to the problems caused by people rushing up to your dog. It ruined my Teddy. He was perfectly trained when we brought him home at 8 months, but people would run at him with their arms out like they were going to scoop him up. Often they would "scream" or squeal with delight, which made it twice as frightening for Teddy. I think he feared that he would be taken away from his new home and family. He is fine as long as people approach him calmly and don't invade his personal space. I can't blame these little guys for being afraid of people acting a little crazy or shoving hands at them.

| TranQuil Tabs for Dogs sold by Pet solutions This seems to help. I cut them in half and crush them, mix with a slice of American cheese. Sometimes I microwave the cheese for about 1/2 sec to soften and mix it up with a fork in the bowl and I make sure it isn't too hot. Sometimes I have a lot of computer work at home. I am not sure whether it is the cheese or the tablet, but Rubi loves it and I get my work done. She does not seem drugged at all, just a little less hyper. Now she just hears me getting out the tablets and goes beserk until I give her the treat. I tried Velveeta, but her tummy didn't like it. |

| Jess was like that and I started feeding her Royal Canin calm for her food. Many vets carry it or you can get it online. It has the same reaction as a turkey dinner, it just triggers a calming effect. She loved it and it did help. It takes a few weeks to see the change. |

| I've gotten better giving the Rescue Remedy and it's much easier now. I'm shocked at how much better he's doing. I still have lots of work to do, but it's much easier with the "edge" off. I wish I tried this a year ago!
