| Luxating Patella I suspect my yorkie has a luxating patella and will need surgery. I live very close by to Savannah GA. Does anyone have recommendations/experiences with any orthopedic vets in the Savannah/Jacksonville FL/ Charleston SC area ? Thank you for the input |

| I’m not sure about the Ortho, but have you taken him in to get checked by the Vet?- They can determine what stage he is. Your local Vet might also know of a well known Ortho in your area. My 5 year old has LP in the back right. Well he has it in both knees but one is worse than the other. You can start him on some Glucosamine supplement. It will help a little. Peanut has been on it and doesn't “skip” as much as he did off of it. Cosequin for Dogs | Combines Glucosamine & Chondroitin

| You can find an ortho specialist at: American College of Veterinary Surgeons Perhaps someone on YT will be able to refer you to someone they have had experience with.

My plan is to medicate as directed but crate her as much as possible x 1 week to see how she does. I would love to avoid surgery but will spare no expense to make sure that she is appropriately managed. She has never been bothered by her knees except for 2 nights ago when we had house guests she was getting really excited and showing off (running on the hardword floors) and then about 2 hours later she was curled up and eventually shaking when I would pick her up. Since that time I gave her the rimadyl and her symptoms almost went away. Hopefully some rest and relaxation in the crate will make her feel better. | |

Opps I’m sorry, I said him. Does she have a name? Hmm the Vet didn't tell you what “grade” her LP was? That’s odd to me. What does “bad’ mean..?? Do you know if the Vet palpated the knee? It almost sounds like she hurt her knee a couple nights ago- Esp if she has never shown any limp or any issues with her knee until when you had guest over. Poor little pumpkin. I would def make her rest in her crate, the more you crate rest her the better and quicker it (hopefully) will heal. Did your wife tell the Vet about the incident she had a couple nights ago? I will pray that she has a little sprang and it isn't LP. To me it really sounds like she did something that night- I could be wrong, but something just doesn't add up… you know? Lots of crate rest for the little pumpkin and hopefully whatever she did heels! It sounds like you and your wife are doing everything right. If for some reason it doesn't get better, I would get a second opinion at a different Vet. Or maybe at an Ortho before you think about any surgery..

If it is really bad...or if a ligament is torn, you won't get results like that. Good luck...and yes R&R in a crate is great! Keep us posted!! Some info on LP and CCL tears are at these links. They were written by the surgeon I use and I feel are very informative. Yorkie Haven Rescue - Patellar Luxation Info Yorkie Haven Rescue - Cranial Cruciate Ligament Tear Info

Her name is Charlie. She is 5 years old. The vet did not specify the grade of the LP and yes she did manipulate the knee and demonstrate to my wife the instability in the knee cap. My wife did include all pertinent history details to the vet. The only previous demonstration of knee issues is roughly once/ month for a split second when running she would hop on 3 legs with back leg up in the air. Our vet has manipulated the knee caps on all visits. Charlie is a regular at the vet office. I would bet her grade at most is a 2 and am just hopeful that we can nurse her along so she doesn't need surgery. Her energy level and demeanor is back to normal. She doesn't appear to be in any pain but we're keeping her in the crate for at least the next week. I'm going to research the glucosamine/chondroitin supplement options. Thank you for the prayers. Donating YT 30K Club Member | Hopefully she will do fine with the Rimadyl and rest. I have one with grade 4 in both knees and she is 8. It doesn't seem to bother her so the vet said do a wait and see. Another one of mine had grade 3 in one leg and 2 in the other. She inured the leg and I ended up having surgery on her knee with the grade 3. She didn't respond well to rest and pain meds, but I some times think I rushed into surgery.

YT 2000 Club Member | My Spud had that when he was younger and the vet wanted to do surgery. We did not do it. He has been on Dasuquin which is a joiont health supplement. He gets 1/2 tab in the am. You can buy this at Petmeds I think. My advice to you is to weigh the odds and make sure you need to do this. I am glad we did not put Spud through that. Watch your Yorkie doesn't jump too much. I hope this helps! |
