| Seems like this is an older post but glad it got "bumped". I have a couple cans of BB, RC and one Caesar left. I will finish it up and then look into other resources. I do "not" feed the wet as his main meal. I feed him a little less than a 1/4 of dry and top it off with a little of the wet 2x a day. I asked my vet about protein in the toy breeds/yorkies and he said anything under 28% should be fine. Junebugs' dry is 22% and the wet is anywhere between 8-9%. BB wet, RC wet and even Caesar shows Carrageenan way down the list (around #11 or so) so I think using these foods as a topper to mix with dry will not harm them. Feeding it as their main meals/nutritional source would be something to reconsider.

| You can look at the ingredient list on the can or pouch. Carrageenan is typically added to canned or refrigerated food or food rolls as a thickening agent.

| Since this is an old thread, I hadn't seen it before. Actually, the idea that carrageenan is harmful to human or animal health is quite controversial. The study with arthritic rodents was done by surgically implanting carrageenan pellets into their bodies--the arthritis was not induced by ingesting carrageenan. There are many health uses for carrageenen. See this article on webmd: CARRAGEENAN: Uses, Side Effects, Interactions and Warnings - WebMD Also read the wikipedia article: Carrageenan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Undoubtedly, there are people and animals who are allergic to carrageenan. If you have a dog who is having digestive or joint problems, carrageenan is one item to consider eliminating to see if their health improves, but I wouldn't automatically avoid a food just because it contains carrageenan... |

| I just checked my cans of Wellness and they have it in them. In fact, in the Wellness "Simple", it is listed as the 4th ingredient Innova does too. The Simply Nourish stews do not seem to have it in them. |

So does that mean carrageenan was surgically implanted? What's the difference if it was injected or implanted, it still caused inflammation. This is what WebMD had to say about the health benefits: "More evidence is needed to rate the effectiveness of carrageenan for these uses." "Medications for high blood pressure (Antihypertensive drugs) interacts with CARRAGEENAN Carrageenan seems to decrease blood pressure. Taking carrageenan along with medications for high blood pressure might cause your blood pressure to go too low. Some medications for high blood pressure include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others." My mom takes high blood pressure meds, so it's imperative she does not ingest any foods w/carrageenan. I did not know this, TG I threw everything away that had carrageenan in it! From Wikipedia: "While some indicate that carrageenan safely passes through rat GI tracts without adverse effect when it is a dietary ingredient,[2] other animal dietary studies have observed colitis-like disease and tumor promotion." Not worth giving IMO, Princess went through colitis b4 & it was horrible, never want her to go through it again. If carrageenan in pet food is the 1st 5 ingredients, I would be concerned about the amount that's in the food. My mom has rheumatoid arthritis on her knees & since she stopped eating foods containing carrageenan, she had not had a flare up, that's enough proof for me.

| I thought carrageenan is just seaweed/kelp? It's a natural thickening agent. Just like gelatin from bone marrow but vegetarian. Do they do some type of chemical process on it to make it bad?

| Carrageenan comes from Irish Moss seaweed. It's a polysaccharide like starch, except it has sulfate groups attached to it. It is not broken down or digested by the body. I could imagine some people and animals being allergic to it because it is an unusual molecule, but it passes through most people without harm. It's considered a natural ingredient and is allowed in organic food because it comes from seaweed. BUT, just because a product is natural or organic doesn't mean that it is 100% safe for everyone. |
