| Uti? My Moses has been the best dog as far as potty training goes. But recently I have found spots where he has pottied in the house. Today when he went potty, he squatted for the longest time while going. I thought that was really odd and as the day progressed, he kept needing to go out. Tonight he threw up and just doesn't feel good. I will get him into the vet tomorrow, but I am wondering if this is a urinary tract infection. Poor baby! Any ideas?

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | It might be. It's best to take him to the vet. Good luck. Please keep us updated on what the vet says

| Well, I took Moses to the vet and he first suspected UTI, however a urinalysis shows crystals and some blood in his urine. He suspects liver shunt, but Moses doesn't have any of the symptoms of that: not lethargic, confused, vomiting, etc. I am confused. I am taking him in on Monday for more testing. He has been eating Primal Raw chicken and I wonder if there is something in that which has caused this. I am switching him back to Blue Buffalo for sensitive stomachs, small breed. Anyone else have any ideas? He is 8.25 lbs, up from 7.75 in February. Too much protein? Thanks y'all!

| Ya, the vet kept him on his anti biotics for UTI, but he didn't think it was a UTI. I don't think it's liver shunt due to lack of symptoms. He goes to daycare once or twice a week and didn't feel good last Tuesday night and wouldn't eat until Wednesday night, when he was back to his old self...Fingers crossed for Monday's blood tests.

| The vet did a bile test and they called with results today. It's not good...his acids were off the charts. The next step is blood work and an ultra sound on Thursday. They really suspect liver shunt. After the ultra sound to see how Moses' liver is functioning, possible surgery to correct the problem. Has anyone had experience with this and a successful surgery? I can't believe anything is wrong with this happy, active 2 year old dog! He has been on antibiotics since Friday and he is pottying like normal again. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

| Your vet probablysuspected liver issues right away because the type of crystals present may have been specific to liver disease (ammonium urate). Ultrasound is ok, but it is sometimes hard to find shunts with them (and if it just microvascular dysplasia, that wouldn't be seen either). Theyare good o see size, over health, health of abdomen, etc. though. A skilled sonographer is needed. Soe skip and go right o other testing. An internist should manage the case. If it is liver shunt (many liver issues can mess with bile acids), surgery in yorkies is very successful. Some symptoms (although can be asymptomatic); Shaking Seizing Drooling OpVomiting Diarrhea Any symotoms related to food or meds UTIs Cryptorchidism Itching Pancreas issues Head pressing Circling Staring Small Etc.

| The thing about symptoms is he has none of these! That's why I don't think it's liver shunt, but the vet does. Ultrasound will show the function of the liver, so that's why they are doing that. Then I will meet with a surgeon who will review everything and make recommendations. I was told the surgeon won't even look at Moses without the ultrasound so they can see how the liver is working.

| It is good to have. It is just that if it's normal that means nothing. Both liver shunt and microvascular dysplasia (microscopic shunting) can be asymptomatic. There is a symptom now with the bladder. Although any lver functioning issue can make bile acids rise, significant increases in yorkies usually do mean ls/mvd. Your vet is on the righttrack. Drugs can raise numbers, but thy should not be very high from drugs alone unlessthere is an underlying problem. aanyway, my girl does not have any neuro symptoms, no shuntseen on ultrasound, but does have UTIs fairly often. Her bile acids are very high at ties. The internist wasn't too concerned after ultrasound except or watching drugs and food given. They will be able to walk ou through it. Although I absolutely woudn't use the current food, Iwouldn't invest in too much of anything else until you talk to the is/surgeon. ?they may (or may not) decide in an rx diet.

| Thanks so much Ellie May. We had the ultrasound today and there is for sure a liver shunt. I have the name of a surgeon and will consult with him our next course of action. The ultra sound tech said that if he was an older dog, he wouldn't suggest surgery. But since he is only 2 years old, he thinks we might want to consider it. And Moses' case is definitely asymptomatic. It's a blessing that he had those issues on Thanksgiving day because we may have never known about this issue. The vet had no issues with his food and didn't suggest changing his diet, but mentioned that I might want to bring that up with the surgeon. Will keep all updated...wow, this really scared me to death! So grateful that my little cuddlebug is all curled up next to me right now!!
