Your vet probablysuspected liver issues right away because the type of crystals present may have been specific to liver disease (ammonium urate).
Ultrasound is ok, but it is sometimes hard to find shunts with them (and if it just microvascular dysplasia, that wouldn't be seen either). Theyare good o see size, over health, health of abdomen, etc. though. A skilled sonographer is needed. Soe skip and go right o other testing. An internist should manage the case. If it is liver shunt (many liver issues can mess with bile acids), surgery in yorkies is very successful.

Itching
Pancreas issues
Head pressing
Circling
Staring
Small
Etc.
