Food opinions

Well as most of you know Wellness had a recall again so I am not feeling really good about feeding Callie the Wellness core Small Breed any more so I was kinda wanting to get yalls opinion on what food to go with. It has to be grain free, the pieces can't be to big, no lamb because it makes her tummy very upset and I would prefer a dog food I could buy locally but sense my choices are becoming very slim I am open to ordering online. We did blue buffalo wilderness before the Wellness but she would not eat the life bits so it felt like a waste.

Also I found a way to get Joel to eat the life bits. As long as I feed him them at night when he's more hungry he'll eat them, so now I dont have to switch his food

After the last Diamond recalls I had to switch my two from the Natural Balance LID Sweet Potato and venison. Jada has allergies and can't do grains either, so I had to find something with no chicken, fish or grains. I went with California Naturals Venison formula. I do have to order it, but I had to order the Natural Balance too. We don't have any stores near that sell the better kibbles. The size of the kibble in the California Naturals is a little bit smaller than a dime.

My 3 favorite foods are Canine Caviar, Fromm, and Acana. I switched from Fromm (salmon a la veg) to Canine Caviar (wilderness) about 1-2 months ago, and am really happy with it

The recall was limited to one type of wellness and was due to a higher moisture content than normal - no dangerous bacteria, etc. Why write off the whole brand? Seems like an overreaction.

I recommend the grain-free Fromm varieties (Toki's favorite is definitely the Game Bird although she loved the Beef Frittata and the Surf & Turf too!).

I would also look into Earthborn...they have 4 different grain-free varieties. The Primitive Natural and Coastal Catch are both lamb-free I believe...Toki came to us as a ~3 pound pup eating Coastal Catch and didn't have any problems with the kibble size although I can't say for sure how small the pieces are.

Nutrisource might be another option...they have 3 grain-frees without lamb. We had Toki on the grain-free Pure Vita (same company) for a brief time and the PV had relatively bigger kibbles but I want to say that Nutrisource is smaller although you'll probably want to confirm that.

Anyway, just some suggestions or things I would personally look at! It's annoying when you get something that works and then you have to change it because of recalls. I hope you find something that Callie will do awesomely on!

I guess it's just personal preference and what you feel comfortable with. I don't write off a company because they have a recall but this is the second recall in the past year and I don't want to just be waiting around to see my formula pop up on that list. To me, it comes down to quality control issues. And higher moisture content will affect the shelf-life of the product and how long it will stay mold-free and safe to eat which is a legitimate concern for me. I do like some of the Wellness formulas but will back off the brand for a little while, just because I feel more comfortable doing that.

FROMM! I love Fromm dearly. If they ever sell out or change a formula or anything of the sort... I will be so upset. They're the one pet food I've never read anything bad about and well, yeah, I just love them. MrChewy has really good deals... If you spend $49, you get free shipping, so I always use it as an opportunity to get everything (his chews, treats, toys, etc that he may need). Sometimes places have it that you wouldn't expect, even if you check their retailers on their site, sometimes it's at other locations and they don't have them on their site.

This is not there first recall that is why I am writing off the whole brand at least for now. I don't want to sit around and wait for it to be one that effects my dog and makes her sick.

We are currently feeding Horizon Legacy. It is grain free and is a very good quality food. Horizon is a small Canadian company that manufactures their own foods using locally sourced ingredients. They are not always easy to find though. You would have to check to see if it is available in your area, or otherwise you would have to order it online, if interested. The store I buy from recommends Horizon as their first choice, then Fromm as their second choice. Horizon has 3 different grain free lines, Legacy, Amicus, and Pulsar. We have used Legacy and Pulsar with good luck. We have not tried Amicus, but it is formulated for small breed dogs. The Horizon grain free foods are just a little lower priced per lb than Fromm grain free.
