I have a 3 month old Yorki, she had a seizure last night! Very scary!! Took her to the ER vet and she is now being tested for Epilepsy. This is my 3rd Yorki over the last 18 years and have never had any health problems in the past. Does anyone here know anything about siezures? She was really "out of it" for a long time but seems fine today. Vet said it could be a 1 time thing or maybe on going very worried.

Just wanted to ask did your vet check her blood sugar? A yorkie that young if she is not getting enough food or nutrients in the day her blood sugar can drop. They are soo hyper and active that sometimes they foreget to eat. If the blood sugar gets too low it will cause a seizure. It could be hyperglycimia.

				   | my yorkie started having seizures when he was 4 months old. we took him to the vet and turns out he has a liver shunt. he has surgery and hasn't had a seizure since. i would ask my vet to check the liver enzymes and bile acids too.

I was going to suggest that you have his bile acids checked too. Seizures are a symptom of liver disease, shunt or mvd. It's an easy test and can rule out liver problems. My Indiana was 7 mos old when he was diagnosed with a liver shunt. He had surgery and is fine now. If his bile acids are normal it could be epilepsy. I had a shepherd/wolfhound mix that started seizuring when she was 6wks old. She was on phenobarbitol her whole life and lived to be 15yrs old. I now have a 10 yrs old Jack Russell that has acquired epilepsy and she is on phenobarbitol and doing well. Seizures are scary, but if it truly is epilepsy, it can be treated and the dog can live a long life.

Thanks for all the support. I have taken her to the vet and had blood work done. Unfortunatly I have not heard form the vet yet with the results. They have to send the blood to a lab in Seattle. Anyway she is just fine now running around with all the energy in the world. I hope thats a good sign.

I had a yorky that had epilepsy. At first vet thought it was low blood sugar because he was 2 mos old at the time but he cont. to have a couple of these episodes per month. The vet changed his dog food thinking he had food sensitivities. Well we moved to another state and my dog s episodes increasedto 1-2 times a week and I took him to a new vet that prescribed pnenobarbital. His seizures remained under control with the PB.but blood chemistries are drawn every year because PB CAN BE TOXIC TO THE LIVER.My Kirby eventually developed cirrhosis of the liver and passed away this year due to liver toxicity.Cathy and Yoshi
