| Scrappington has become FATtington! He's getting too comfortable and now he's fat! Lol. I have been feeding him two tablespoons of kibble three x a day. I'm now cutting it back to lunch of only one scoop. I'm thinking of cutting all meals down to one scoop now. When I first got him he was skin and bones and went through a very invasive neuter. I fed him mOre to try to help him heal faster. He's also got bad LP 4 on his left leg and can't run or do stairs. He doesn't play fetch, if I give him a toy he just hoards it. I need some more tips on how to get him to lose a few pounds. He's so small that the weight really caught up with hIm really quickly. So I can't take him out for longer walks. He doesn't run, or fetch. =\ I have him on holistic select fish formula. It's about 350 cal per cup. It's fairly low in fat and protein bc Uni has pancreatitis and this is what I give her.

| Cut any treats and really measure his portions. If you think you can reduce his portions and he can still be satisfied, I'd try doing that. I can bring Kaji around more often if you like. It helps Kaji get some exercise, and Scraps tends to engage his turbo side when tryin to steal whatever toy Uni and Kaji are using at the moment.

| Is there any place you could take him swimming? That is supposed to be really good for dogs with LP and if I had a place I would be taking Callie.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Yeah, are you counting treat calories -- even those other people might be sneaking him? That's where I run into the biggest problems with mine. When they start gaining, I switch to frozen peas and carrots as treats.

| he he, my Ellington is nicknamed Smellington ;-) Elli came to me thin, and then got quite soft (particularly in his bottom!) so I cut back on his food. He dropped the extra weight pretty fast, within a week or two. He's recently got a little too thin again, so I am upping his food again. I find I just keep an eye on his weight and adjust as we go on. For example when we're out walking more, he is burning more calories than when we have more restful weeks. |

| When you say a "scoop" -- how much do you mean, and how much does he weigh at his ideal weight? Even if he doesn't like to run or fetch, short walks would still help. Maybe even just totaling 30 minutes per day. I admit to not knowing much about LP, but maybe walks on grass would be easier on his knees? I do agree with swimming if you have access to a place... we have an indoor canine swimming center near us, but I've never used it. Obviously each dog is different, but for reference, very active 16lb Jackson will eat as much as 3/4 cup on a very active day and about 1/2 cup on a lazy day when we won't do anything besides potty walks and a little fetch inside (so 1/4 cup in the AM, 1/4 cup in the PM -- for him, I do fill it up a bit higher because he is in good shape, and skinny yet muscular). But he would gain weight fast if he was getting more than 3/4 cup each day.

| This title gave me a good giggle! I agree with the kiddie pool though. Hopefully, he can float!

I think cutting his food back just a tiny bit, along with some swimming and maybe some green beans for treats (or to fill him up at mealtimes) would really help.

| thanks everyone. One scoop is one tablespoon. So he used to get 2 tbsp 3x per day. (6 scoops) I cut it down to 4-5 scoops. the scoops are level, not rounded. I've since been even knocking a few kibbles out of the scooper each time. He doesn't get treats as in dog treats, but gets snacks like cucumber, carrots, lettuce, etc. He's now up to 6.5 lbs! Uni is much bigger than him and she is only a bit under 6.5. Even Uni is a smidge fat. I would say her ideal weight is right at 6. Scraps should probably be at 5 or 5.5. When I first p icked him up he was a bit less than 5 (he was sick at the time). We do have a pool. We tried him in the before witha lifevest on. he was so freaked out I thought his eyeballs where gonna pop out of his head! I'm sure it didn't help that the first time he went in was bc Uni pushed him in. perhaps we could try again. He doesn't even like to put the vest on. He's such a grumpy old man.

It does really take a lot of patience when dogs are afaird or un-interested in the water. Also don't feed any food after 4pm that does help.

When we go swimming I bump it up to almost 3/4 c up in the day. Now that is when we are on vacation and he is exercising a few hours a day - between swimming, hiking, tricks, and agility. Also I'm pretty lavish with the treats on those days. Razzle is still pretty active around the house - he loves to chase the cat!. And he loves to run around and go up to the windows to bark at what-ever!
