| Puppy from "Old" sire Hello I have a question on Dogs. I think Akc say 8mo -12yrs for Males? But I want a pup from a breeder. The Mom is 4yrs her second litter but the Sire is ~10yrs?? Theres no know health problems with older parents??? Like sometimes in "Humans" At least I know he has no know "defective" genes?? Just checking if this is a problem. Thanks Mike |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Are you sure about the 12 year rule, I thought it was 10. I'm no breeder, so I could be wrong, but I would follow what the AKC says.

| Thanks for the reply. I just want to know if there any common knowledge of risk or problems??? Out of the faq Akc site = "No dog or litter out of a dam under eight (8) months or over twelve (12) years of age at the time of mating, or by a sire under seven (7) months or over twelve (12) years of age at the time of mating, will be registered unless the application for registration shall be accompanied by an affidavit or evidence which shall prove the fact to the satisfaction of The American Kennel Club." |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | As long as the male is genetically healthy his age should be no issue. I personally disagree with akc's breeding age for females. It's inhumane.

| For older males, the AKC adn Canadian Kennel Club for that matter will allow a breeding with a male once he is 12 years old and older but to register the litter and just before mating a semen sample has to be collected and verified by a veterinarian that the male is still producing lots of active sperm cells. Under 12 years of age down to 6 months of age, this is not required. I agree, I don't like the idea of breeding a female once they are getting close to 6 years old and rule of thumb for me is no more than 3 litters from age of about 2 years to just over 5. Some I don't get three litters, I spay them before that. |

| Thanks for the reply's. Female is ~4. Breeder said maybe one more litter then she gets spayed. The Male is ~10-11? Highly recommended stud. American Champion. So probably thats why still breeding. I just want something healthy...pet quality. I went to a show breeder hoping they breed for health. Thanks |
