For older males, the AKC adn Canadian Kennel Club for that matter will allow a breeding with a male once he is 12 years old and older but to register the litter and just before mating a semen sample has to be collected and verified by a veterinarian that the male is still producing lots of active sperm cells. Under 12 years of age down to 6 months of age, this is not required.
I agree, I don't like the idea of breeding a female once they are getting close to 6 years old and rule of thumb for me is no more than 3 litters from age of about 2 years to just over 5. Some I don't get three litters, I spay them before that.
