Senior Yorkie Talker | another giardia question There are 3 doctors in my vets office and a month ago the Dr. said my baby had giardia but is showing no outward signs so we would leave it alone. As I posted last week, the other Dr. saw him, pulled out a stool sample (ugh) and called last night that he still has giardia and to pick up meds for him. Pancur and a shampoo to use. I asked the nurse why each doctor had a different opinion and she just shrugged her shoulders. I bought the meds so I have them but wanted to ask the community what they thought. My baby is only 4-1/2 pounds and will be 5 months old next week. Any thoughts?? |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I have heard that if they are showing no signs, you don't have to treat them, however, it is possible that they could spread the illness to other dogs, so maybe that's why the second doctor wanted to treat? Also, perhaps the medicine has a down side and the first doctor doesn’t believe in over treating with medicine? I would insist upon an answer from the doctors though, don't just settle for shrugged shoulders, it's an excellent question. Best of luck!

| giardia Confused I have a new Biewer Yorkie female who is just now 4 months. We got her when she was 10 weeks old. My vet said she was in good health but her poo-sample showed Positive for Giardia. He treated her with Panacur twice in the first month, and we took another sample. She is being treated again because the test show that the Giardi is not active but she is now considered a Carrier. The vet is treating her this second time with a longer time span for the Panacur. My other yorkie was treated too... Is this considered a safe practice? She is fine on the Panacur no problems ...just wondering if they can get rid of this being as she is a carrier. Thankyou...

| I have a friend how rescued a dog from down south that had giardia. She tried everything then went to a holistic vet. The holistic vet recommended Plain Greek Yogurt. It worked it a charm but the veg said the dog must stay on it for a least 6 months. My friend doesn't plan to ever stop it though. It is a lab/beagle mix 45 pounds. 1 tablespoon twice daily.

| Thank you for the advice, I am really confused on this one... my Biewer puppy is happy, playful and she eats, and poops fine...normal stools...but the vet said she is a carrier now, so I just wonder if this med Panacur would really do anything to rid of her of this. My other yorkie is fine... The vet was concerned that this can be passed to humans. I am very clean, they are pee pad trained, well she is is trying at the moment, and I dont leave anything down on the floor, once the pad is soiled, its replaced by a new pad, I never leave urine pads down and poop I clean up right away. I just dont want to over-med her if I dont have too. ) thanks for the info I may give this a shot.
