| MN Rabies Vax Survey MINNESOTA: 88.8% of veterinarians responding to a rabies survey from the Board of Veterinary Medicine indicated they give a 3 year rabies vaccine; yet 53.3% fail to give pet owners a corresponding 3 year rabies certificate (36.2% issue a 2 year certificate, 17.1% issue "other"). When asked if they inform clients when they put a different expiration date on the rabies certificate than that on the vaccine administered, 40.9% responded that they did not inform the client. A copy of this 12/14/11 report entitled "Rabies Vaccination Survey Report" may be requested from Dr. John King, Executive Director of the Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine (651) 201-2844 John.King@state.mn.us PERMISSION GRANTED TO CROSS-POST

| This is interesting because I was just reading an article about pets being OVER vaccinated. I am going to do more research on this subject because Lex was just diagnosed with epilepsy and I want to do everything I can for her. I am very curious what others think about the standard vaccinating schedule.

Rabies vaccine labels state that they are for healthy dogs, cats, etc...

| Kris, Maine did not have a medical exemption clause prior to 2005, however, municipalities still accepted written rabies waivers from veterinarians for licensing. You would need to bring your veterinarian's written waiver that describes your dog's condition and their believe that she should not be vaccinated. They will either accept it or not. You might also want to call the office beforehand to ask if they accept waivers. IF they do, then they'll let you license your dog, but she won't have a current rabies tag & she'll be considered unvaccinated if she bites someone or tangles with a rabid animal.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Thanks for posting this. This is kinda....disturbing, ya know? Bc one can't help but think of the reasons behind why a certain vet may not want to inform their client.

I just think they blindly follow a "vaccination schedule" and don't ever think to question whether it is necessary. It just is standard practice and thats what they follow. I personally am a "ask questions" kinda girl- with my furbaby-as well as my human child. I choose NOT to give Lexie flea meds (advantage) because she reacted weird when I used it once and I do not like putting chemicals in her body- I use skin so soft and (knock on wood) have not had a problem. I definately am going to take a hard look at the vaccines before I go to the vet next time- especially with her being epileptic now.

| It's apparent by their responses in the survey that the veterinarians who vaccinate with a 3 year rabies vaccine but give a "2 year" or "other" certificate are fully aware that they are writing down a different expiration date than that on the vaccine.

| After reading this, I pulled out Razael's file since she just had her Rabies shot on the 3rd of January, but her tag they gave me is stamped 2011. I called the Vet. but they are not open. I will call them tomorrow to get this cleared up. Thank you for posting this information.

| Oh, I didn't get a certificate, it's just on her paperwork. Is that ok, or was I supposed to get a certificate?

| You'll need a certificate to license your little one, make sure it's a 3 year.
