Yep, def needs a visit to the vet to rule out, Luxating Patella and Leggs Parthes (sp). My Miss Mini, out of the clear blue sky started doing the same thing, took her to the vet, had an xray and def Leggs Parthes - enter Orthopaedic Speialist, surgery and she it was fine.

With that said, it might be nothing, but you definitely want to make sure!

Did you ask why he needs anesthesia for an xray? I would want to know. The only time I have seen that done is if they cannot assess a pup's knee well and are suspicious of a ligament tear. Sometimes in order to do that they need to anesthetize them.
Hope they get to the bottom of Milo's issues.

Sorry i haven' t got back till now. We have been busy. Milo is doing fine, playing like ever. I took him back to our vet for him to check him one more time. He checked his knee and said he didn't think it is his knee because he said it wasn't popping out of place. He tried to see if it would pop out and it didn't. He checked his hips and saw no signs of him being in any pain. He acted just fine. He said he would do x rays in 3 months because if he did find something that by then his growth plate would be closed. He said that the growth plates need to be closed before any surgery. He now has begin to hold that back leg up when he is standing again. The new vet said x rays now. What do i do. I really trust our old vet because we have used him for about 10 years or so. Is he telling us right about they don't need surgery until growth plates have closed?

I don't believe that is true. I would do a consult with a board certified ortho surgeon.

The first time i took him about this problem the new vet at our old vet office said lp then took him for to a whole new vet she said hip. Last week i asked for our old vet that we have used for 10 years and he said he really didn't see anything but if he keeps holding it up he would xray in 3 months. He said it may go away. The reason i didn't ask for him the first time is he way busy so had to see his new helper.

Leggs Perthes can start to evidence itself about 7mths or sometimes earlier if it is particularly bad.
I would be going to a board certified orthopaedic vet. They won't recommend surgery if surgery is not required. Also their Xray techs tend to be better, and your dog may not need to be sedated for this Xray.

If the knee is good, then holding leg up, logically can come from two different places, look upwards towards the hip, and below knee to "ankle" and all the toe digits. Something is obviously bothering your pup, given the leg up position.

I had Razzle's OFA's on hips done, and no sedation was necessary.

I think waiting is a bad idea because he could be in pain and you not know it and somethings can get worse if you wait to long. I would go to an orthopedic surgeon.

My Lily was lifting her leg often too. One vet said No worries just a little knee slipping we call it LP. 4 months later it is really getting bad and I just knew she was having pain. New Vet, did x-rays it was LP alright Leggs Parthes! She had literally no hip socket left and the top of her femur was spurred and grinding into her hip. He said her pain was constant. I knew he was right. BTW all x-rays where taken while completely awake. Surgery was Monday. We expect that she will heal well and be free of pain. This is not a Fix, that would take a new hip. We did FHO This is a repair. She will be able to move about pain free. May have one leg a bit shorter.

These pups recover well after FHO surgery. I have had a few of them!

Good luck to Lily...hope her recovery goes very well.

She is lucky to have you....that surgery is so necessary when their hips are like that and the only way to really know is with an xray. I had an adult pup come to me with Legg Perthes a couple of years ago...it made me so sad for him that he had lived all his life with his leg in such condition...so painful.

How long has this pup been lifting its leg?

If this is legg calve perthes and it is allowed to progress (and it could be with the pup being symptomatic), then there is a risk of femoral head breaking. If a vet is eliciting a pain response when palpating a hip, this should not wait. I think it would be best to just go to an ortho surgeon and let them put an end to this debate about what the problem is (or is it both...). Also, if one of them is worried about the knee, have they ruled out a CCL tear? A general vet and an orthopedic surgeon need to be on the same page here to help your pup. I think if the limping has gone on for a week+, it would not be a good idea to wait three more months for a diagnosis.
