hurt back leg Why is my 5 month old yorkie holding his foot up? He will run and play on it but when he gets up he will hold his back leg up like it's hurt. I don't know what he did to hurt it but he will jump off the couch. I wonder if he hurt it from jumping? |
Holly holds her right front leg up often. She will be playing and stop and immediately pulls that leg up. We went out of town for Thsnksgiving and the place where we boarded her would send us pics daily of her playing with the other dogs and I'm several of them that leg was up. We think it's so cute!! That being said, she has always done that and it is always the same leg. We know she didn't hurt it. |

LP stands for Luxating Patella. It comes in four grades - 1-4 the lower numbers being less severe. And 5mths old and jumping off the couch, unless your couch is 6 inches off the floor; I'd stop this activity right away. A mature healthy bone structure should handle normal jumping (unless you have a very tiny dog), but at 5mths old the growth plates do not close until at least 12months. So as wee pups we need to safeguard their boney structure. That means good quality exercise, good food, and limited jumping and especially jumping onto slippery surfaces like hardwood floors. The kneecap (patella) will slip out of alignment, and in the earlier grades will self adjust back in; but there is a temporary "locking" of the knee and the inability to flex or extend. Take your pup into the vet and explain symptoms. As this is a very common problem in the toy breeds, your vet should be very familiar with it. There are specific exercises you can do to help strengthen the upper and lower thigh. |
I took Milo to the vet today they said that he needed sugery to fix his knee. She said that thay could fix his knee when i take him to be neutred. She also said that arthritis will set in if it dont get fixed. I am really worried about having both done at the same time. Will he be ok? I hope it won't set his potty training back. He has been doing good going to his pads. |
First, consider getting a second opinion, and from a board certified orthopaedic surgeon. A nd yes I would be worried about getting both done at the same time, along with a neuter surgery. Please take the time to explore your options, by at least getting a second opinion. |
Thanks, and I am going to look for one. They gave him Deramaxx for pain. I don't really know if he needs it because he will still play. I don't like giving him something if he don't need it. I am worried about him. He got shots today and he is sore from that. |

There is nothing wrong with getting your dog neutered at the same time, the actually neutering takes less than 10 minutes, and it makes way more sense to have it done at the same time, rather than make him have two seperate surgeries. And we have an excellent orthopedic surgeon who is a regular vet also, so you dont have to have one or the other. |
Also, i forgot to add, you prob could check with your vet but , the pain meds can prob just be on an as needed basis. No need to give them if he doesnt seem painful, i know i wouldnt. |
The pain meds do say as needed. I did give him half of one. He also got his last shots today and he is really sore. He won't let us pick him up. I was going to pick him up and put him on the couch but he barked out like it hurt. He is just walking around but he can't seem to get comfortable. He was playing this morning so i think he is more sore from the shots. I am a little worried about him because he don't act right. I am not use to him not feeling good. :( |
