| Another Callie food question About I week ago I found a dog food Callie really likes thank goodness. I think it had something to do with the size of the kibble pieces and I should have known that because she never likes big bites of anything and will spit it back at me if its not small enough. My dad had went to look for Canidae dog food for me and the 3 stores he checked didn't have it (Callie liked the sample) so I said well we could try Taste of The Wild so he grabbed a bag of that and because he knows Callie loves chicken he grabbed a bag of Natures Variety Instinct as well. She would not eat Taste Of The Wild but really loves loves this Natures Variety and the small pieces is the major thing she likes I think. Well I did not start measuring food until after her surgery. Well she is getting spoiled because I am hand feeding her in the morning and at night and my grandmother tries to feed her a little in the afternoon but she wont really eat then mostly I do the hand feeding because I'm worried she wont eat if I don't. She is supposed to get about a cup a day but she really is only eating about a half of a cup a day. Should I be worried about this? Is it ok that she is not eating as much as she is supposed to? Before the surgery she would mostly only eat when we would play so could it be that sense she isn't very active that shes just not that hungry?

| You should go by her body condition. Always ask the vet if she looks good. Forgot how much she weighs but 1/2 cup will be enough for some larger Yorkies and not for others. It's very individual. My 15lb boy doesn't really like his food, so he only eats like 1/2 (sometimes a cup) a day and I'm not particularly worried.

| She is supposed to be 16 pounds but she hasn't been weighed sense her surgery so I'm not sure where she is at now. She is eating enough to go poo twice a day so I imagine that should tell me she is eating enough? I'm a worrier part of that is my anxiety I guess.

| You can go by look and feel, not just weight. Also remember that every treat (including chews) may contain calories. One cup would be what an average dog needs with calories from no other sources. What is on the bag can also be an overestimate.

| Honestly, one cup of Instinct a day sounds like too much for Callie. It's a food with almost 500 kcals/cup which is quite a bit, so less needs to be fed. Especially since she's not active right now. I think she would plump up a lot on that food being fed one cup per day along with treats such as bully sticks, etc. Bestbullysticks contain 12 calories per inch just as an FYI, then add along any other treats she may get for the day. Jackson is a very active 16lbs and eats 3/4 cup of a 391 kcal/cup food. I wouldn't want him any chunkier than his frame he's at it now (pictured posted). With that said, he's got the proper metabolism and body condition that if he wants more food... I'll give it to him, since he doesn't need to lose any weight.

| Wowza! That is a very calorically dense food. Careful with the fat content. 22% may not be horrible, but that is the minimum. I'd wonder what the maximum is.

| I prefer grain free and her skin seems to do better on grain free.

I would stick with less than. Feed her 1/2 cup a day. If she is acting hungry or you think she needs more, give her a bit more. I would just keep an eye on her body condition, etc.

| She got a little chubby looking like right before her surgery looks not chubby now but it was mostly because she was not getting as much activity as she normaly does because her leg/knee was hurting her but now that its getting better she will slowly be getting more acivity. She just loves her 5 minute walks twice a day she is gonna be thrilled when we move up to 10 minutes hopfully on Thursday. When she is all better and running I still plan to take her for more walks then I did in the past because she wont come home in pain anymore. I am really excited for her to get better and get to run like she loves to do in our back yard.

| Nature's Variety is a much better food than Canidae (unless talking about the new grain free line). It is also a richer food as mentioned before so you won't need to feed as much of it. If your dog is not acting hungry, she is probably getting enough. Keep an eye on her and adjust accordingly if necessary. We used to feed Nature's Variety all the time, but have been experimenting with other foods since the price of NV has gone up lately.

| I worry about Callie getting used to be hand fed so when she is better I was thinking of getting this Amazon.com: Aikiou Interactive Dog Bowl - Pink:... to get her to eat her dog food out of without having to hand feed her forever (I do not mind when she is sick or on trips). She has a different type puzzle she loves doing for treats and a lot of the time when we go out of town the only way she will eat is if she is working for it like tricks or having it tossed to her so i thought this would be a good thing to try with her food.
