Default Good food???

My two dogs just do not like dog food. I can mix it occasionally with other foods, but they won't even always eat it then.

Are the following foods good for my dogs: (cooked)

Chicken
Fish
Beef - all kinds
Pork - all kinds
Gravy (occasionally)
Liver
Rice
Cereal (high fiber)
Cottage cheese
Yougart
Cheese
Raw carrots (they do love to chew on these)
Dog treats - (occasionally)

I suppose they should take vitamins - ?

***** I don't feed any of these foods to my dogs every day. And, I am continuing trying to mix some dry and canned dog food with the above foods.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Feeding my two small dogs some of the above foods is not a lot of extra work because these are the foods I am often fixing for myself.

Thanks - Carol Jean

I stay away from beef and anything high in fat. In fact my Ava's breeder said beef never crossed her yorkie's lips. She feels it is too rich for their sensitive digestive tracts. Anther breeder told me i made a mistake when i fed my puppy ham. She said no pork for yorkies so I stay away from prok too and they occasionally get bolied chicken or turkey with rice.

Eggs are also okay occasionally and mine usually get this treat on Saturday mornings. Carrots are good, cheese is okay, as is fish I think. I would be afraid of the gravy because of the fat content. Cottage cheese is good too.

I recommend staying away from salmon because it can from what I've heard they can get sick from it. I would ask the vet about feeding salmon before giving your dogs any. Here are a couple of good sites with good information pretaining to what you can and can not give your baby.

I hope these help a little.

Thanks for your replies. It's hard though to believe that beef is bad for dogs. It is in most of the dog food you buy.
-----------------------------

Here's what's in one can of healthy dog food that I have.

Beef. Water. Potatoes. Calcium Carbonate. Salt. Potassium Chloride. Garlic. Vitamin A Acetate. D-Activated Animal Sterol. Vitamin D-3, DL-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate (Source of Vitamin E). Vitamin B-12. Riboflavin. Niacin. Calcium Pantothenate. Choline Chloride. Folic Acid. Menaione. Sodium Bisulfite (Vitamin K). Pyridoxine Hydrochloride. Thiamine Monoitrate. D-Biotin. DL-Methionine. L-Lysine. Sodium Selenite. Manganous Proteinate. Zinc Proteinate. Iron Sulfate. Copper Sulfate. Calcium Iodate. Cobalt Carbonate.

A lot of the above are preservatives and not necessary for a good diet. However, some are essential vitamins and minerals - which we do get in the foods we eat, but to be sure nothing is missed - it would probably be good to supplement what I feed my pets with a good vitamin.

I read the articles you gave me - they are basically the same article. They were interesting and helpful. Thanks.

I'm going to ask my vet - about not using commercial dog food and preparing their food myself.

There are so many things that I eat that are perfectly okay for my dogs. And -- a lot of things that are bad for dogs aren't that great for people either - fats, junk food, too much salt, sweets, etc. It's possible planning their meals will cause me to have a healthier diet also.

I still do plan, as I said, to add some dry dog food to most of the foods I prepare for them.

Well - I'll do some more research and eventually let everyone know what I have learned.

Thanks again - Carol Jean

I have heard the pork is not good and also beef. Cottage cheese and cheese is good, my liitle guy likes rice just wet it down, they can choke easily. I think gravy also would not be good because of the fat.

When dogs don't eat dog food, it is usually because they have been given something that tastes so much better to them. However, the above diet sounds to me to be a prescription for sick doggies down the road.

For one thing, fatty foods are an invitation for pancreatitis. For another thing, dogs cannot digest dairy foods. I wouldn't go beyond the chicken, rice, very little cottage cheese, and very, very little cheese (pancreatitis and dairy). Raw baby carrots given one or two a day might be OK, but you should know that they really do not digest them very well unless they are finely shredded or chopped (whatever). That would apply to any raw vegetable. Multi-vitamins should be given daily.

However, I recommend dry dog food as well as brushing their teeth daily.

I think it is great any Yorkie owner studies the nutrition they feed their dogs, they will learn alot.

Here is the food I feed my dogs and I do the raw diet and they love it.

http://www.naturesvariety.com/

If you do a search on YT you will see many threads on this topic but my best suggestion is for you to know what could harm them and to read the labels. Sorry to say, most vets (per my vet) have had very little training in vet school on nutrition. Of course years ago (maybe still true) medical doctors didn't have indepth training either. If I remember you are a nurse and you would know this better than I would.

Good Luck in your search as I know you will do what is right by your little one.

Wink These Yorkies eat Organic

The following Organic foods have worked like a DREAM >
beef hamburger
buffalo hamburger
turkey baked
limited Chicken baked
carrots raw
greenbeans raw
corn raw
potatoes raw with seasalt
baby spinach leaves raw
cottage cheese
tomatoes with seasalt
blueberries
strawberries
mango
olive oil
flax oil
seaweed
baby peas raw with seasalt
fresh non-chlorine added water (Not-Tap)

Processed foods given are>
Bill Jac Puppy free access
Haagen Daz strawberry or Vanilla
powdered puppy milk with colostrum

I read labels for my entire family, and if its not good enough for my family i will not give it to my yorkies. Fillers, additives, perservatives, dies, and modified toxic chemicals are everywhere in our everyday foods. I try and void out as much toxic foods as i can. Organic Raw and fresh is what we like best.

Tongue For A Happy York Say No To Pork

No, its very dangerous to give pork. Pork carries a highly deadly virus that kills many people a year but is not advertized as a dangerous meat. The virus lives in the lungs and surrounding tissues and is not killed by high heat or coldstorage. It is dangerous for humans and highly dangerous for little animals. Thats why if you feed it to a dog you will see Bloody poohs and sometimes vomiting the next day. Sometimes lasting 3-4days. SAY NO TO PORK
