| What to do when in heat? I have a 7 month old Yorkie, weighing 3.1 pounds only! Funny thing is she eats a lot! 3 meals a day of Royal Canin and 2-3 snacks a day and only 1 or 2 walks a week! Anyhow, this is my first dog and I have never had an experience in dealing with a female dog who is in heat. Can someone tell me what to do? My yorkie is a bossy one! If she doesn't like something, no matter what I do, she won't let me do it! So I'm not too sure if she is willing to wear a diaper! Also, since she is so small in size, can it be true that she won't even bleed or bleed much during her heat cycle? She is confined in her playpen when I am not home because she tends to eat EVERYTHING she finds on the floor. I heard there is something you can buy to hide her smell so dogs won't detect that my little baby is in heat. Would that work is I place the entire container on my window instead of putting the liquid on her tail? Please share your experience so I can prepare! I don't want to freak out last minute!

| Keep her indoors when you can't be with her. Never leave her alone outside, not even for a split second. Forget the diapers, they keep themselves clean.

| If she were spayed you would never have to worry about it, if not make sure she is kept away from other dogs during season even females, since she is so tiny they could hurt her, some get a bit jealous and snippy some will even try to hump them

| Keep her indoors and away from any other dog. Get her spayed. Best for her. |

| My boyfriend and I are considering getting another yorkie smaller than her so she won't have too much trouble giving birth. But again, we won't breed her if she doesn't gain any weight soon! Her adult size was suppose to be 4 pounds. If she doesn't get to around 4 pounds, I won't consider breeding her since it will be dangerous!

| if you are not a fully experienced breeder breeding under direct supervision from another breeder who has been doing this for years then you really have no business breeding your dog. breeding is a very difficult endeavor that takes a ton of knowledge that it takes years to learn. unless your dog is of show quality and comes from a long line of yorkies with genetic testing and good sound bodies and health then she needs to be spayed and not bred. leave the breeding to those that have been doing it all their lives and if you want to learn about it in the future find a breeder close to you on www.ytca.org and have them mentor you in the proper breeding techniques and practices before you ever try it on your own. please spare the world more yorkies being bred for "fun" or "Money" and don't breed this poor girl, it's her life you are taking into your hands and she doesn't deserve to loose her life over your wishes to have pups off her. |

| You should contact our member..Lorraine. She is in Vancouver and has tons of experince with tinies and spaying...Mallory was barely 3 pounds when she was spayed and Lorraine came to visit and bring her to me...and her small sister was spayed at the same time...she can recommend a good vet who does not charge very much.IMO Mallory had a spay and all her puppy teeth removed, rabies and it was less then $400. |

| I would definitely suggest spaying her. She is much too small to be bred. It will be in her best interests if you spay her and do not put her through the pain and stress of birth.

Owning a stud dog is such fun...leg cocking to mark the house...then howling and whining if you so not allow him free run with the female...easiest road to insanity I can think of..good luck | |

| Please consider getting her fixed. Mikki weighed 3 1/2 lb when she was spayed and she did just fine. Bounced back very quickly. It will be much easier on you if you do the spay. Then you will not have to worry about the bleeding or any accidents. Letting her have puppies could put her at risk in so many ways.

| i hope you can see the sarcasm in this post. Stud dogs are hard to handle and to keep in your yard. Females in heat are a huge problem as well. not to mention spaying significantly reduces the risks of female types of cancers. |

And, adding to this, 3 lb is too small to have puppies in my opinion. If money is the issue on getting her spayed, have you checked for local places that will do it at a reduced cost? In my area we have a clinic that does it way cheaper than my vet does. I think that would be better than the risk of her having puppies.

| I would get your little one spayed and enjoy her as a delightful pet. These little dogs often require C-sections bc of their size. They have a higher incidence of pregnancy problems than other bigger breeds, which requires more money at the vet. These are an expensive breed as a whole to breed. Plus, her small size definitely sets you up for problems. I have heard they should be at least 5 lb to breed. Maybe some of the breeders could weigh in on this. (I see some already have.) You will need to assist with the whelp. The pups can be born w problems requiring emergency care. Your little girl can even die while birthing from complications. She sounds like a wonderful little girl, full of personality. I would enjoy her as a pet.

| I think you should consider having her spayed. You wouldn't want to risk her life giving birth!!!
