| Now! Small Breed Grain Free Dog Food? Acana issues... Anyone feeding this? I see they have a small breed formula. I think I am going to try it with them. For some unknown reason both Max & Mickey are having really dry poops (some dehydrated looking as ashy looking so dry) on this new bag of Acana Grasslands. Just about done with the medium size bag. They were on Wellness Small Breed but Max was having soft stools after 2 big bags (3 months). Mickey and Max both had terrible eye boogers. So I rotated back to Acana Grasslands. Should I see if the really dry stools continue on a new bag of Acana Grasslands or find a new food like Now! Small Breed? Thanks

| If your dogs aren't doing well after a couple of bags of a food, I would think about switching. I checked the ingredient list of the Now! small breed and it looks really good- grain free, moderate protein level, small kibble- certainly looks like something that would be good for a yorkie. Worth a shot- do you know anywhere you can get a small bag, or a sample?

| Ashy poops are not a bad thing, in my book! I've often read that the benefits of feeding raw are that the poop turns to 'ash' like stuff in a few days, therefore you don't have to necessarily pick up poop as it goes away by itself pretty easily. But Jackson's poops don't turn to ash but they are tiny and hard (but we only feed pre-made raw a few times a week). I wouldn't say there's anything wrong with ashy poops unless it's causing pain for them. Now! and Go! are wonderful foods. I've fed Go! Endurance with great results and often incorporate into our rotation of Orijen and Acana! They are also a small Canadian company (like Champion) and I really like their company and the products behind them.

| Acana did not work for Maximo. His stools were so dry and hard that he had trouble eliminating. I tried adding water and he refused to eat his kibble softened. Then we tried adding wet food, and that didn't work either. He was gulping his food and his coat dried out. I switched him to Go! Grain Free Endurance formula and everything went back to normal. He is currently eating Fromm Surf and Turf, but I'm going to put him back on Go!.

| I use Castor and Pollux Ultramix. The kibble is tiny and mixed with dried fruits and veggies. Natural ULTRAMIX Adult Canine Formula - Castor & Pollux Pet Works

| Thanks for all the comments and advice. I'll pick up a sample bag (our store has it) and give it a try in the rotation. If all else fails I will go back to Acana Grasslands. I just worry the poop is "too hard" Always worried about the poop... LOL

| Sample Bags Most specialty animal food supply stores have a smaller bag one can get for like $2. Pet Smart may carry them. I am in Canada so our food suppliers are different. I get mine at a store called Buckerfields. I got one and at first she ate it but now she just sniffs a half a sniff and walks away. I agree, it is a good looking food as far as ingredients go. I wish she would eat it!! As I do the Orijen and all the other premium no grain foods. Quote:

| Natural ULTRAMIX Castor & Pollux This she may eat!! Thank you lady jane. I just looked it up and the ingredients pass, it looks like something that will entice her and it is available in my area. Yeah. I am going tomorrow to get some. Thank you again. I hope this works (that she will actually eat it) Quote:

| Now! Small Breed Dog Food My Biewer Yorkies came to me from their breeder on this dog food, and do wonderful on it! Even my 14 year old Jack Russell also eats it and LOVES it! My yorkies have beautiful coats and minimal eye discharge on this food. They also have regular, firm stools--not too loose, not too hard. I am very pleased with this brand and will continue to buy as long as they do this well on it and love it too! Hope this helps! |

I spoke with my vet and consulted with a vet nutritionist and honestly feel safer using Hill's Science Nature's Best because they do feed trials. I remember the awful recalls a few years back and just feel safer with a company that spends the money to thoroughly test their products. I don't want to wake up one day and find a bunch of sick dogs...... I may never have had problems with C&P but the risk was too great to continue feeding it. It also bothered me that they did not respond to my email requesting information about their company. Again, does not make them bad....just that I feel safer with Hill's.

I have been feeding Riley Primal raw in the mornings and Acana Kibble, at night..... since about March. Right now he is on the Acana Ranchlands... I had emailed Petcurean for coupons for the Go! Endurance and I got a reply email from Michelle Dixon [who sent several coupons....] stating: Thank-you for your inquiry. I would like to send you a coupon for our NOW! Small breed as this is more appropriate, does this work for you? I got a bag of the NOW! Small breed and Riley would not eat it, at all. I ended up giving the bag to my sister and went back to the Acana. Good Luck! It can be soooo Frustrating. | |

But even though Jackson did well on Go!, he never did like it. He wouldn't touch the dry kibble unless I mixed something good in with it. But I always thought it was the small size of the kibbles- he prefers bigger kibbles.

The company and what they do to keep pets safe and healthy medically and nutritionally is far more important than the ingredient list.
