| Itchy 12 week puppies Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum. We just got 2-12 week old puppies on Monday. Bella - 1lb 15oz and Gracie - 1lb 8oz. I took them straight to our vet and she said they were very healthy, except they had yeasty ears. I have just about got that under control with MalaceticHC ear cleanser. I gave them a bath in Johnson's baby shampoo on Monday and towel dried them well. Yesterday they started acting itchy and they are still itchy. I am calling our vet in the morning to see if they want to see them or can tell me what to do, but in the meantime I thought I could get some help on here. They are the sweetest little babies and I want them to be happy, not itchy! I've had 2 other Yorkie's before these babies and they never had anything like this. Thanks for any help you can offer. | This situations sounds quite similar with my experience of bringing one of my puppies home. First we had to deal with his yeasty ears, with sometime we cleared it up with some ear cleaner. Then we slowly started to notice that Max was itching more than normal. We have tried everything, and we have come to the conclusion that he has allergies. We have not concluded what he is allergic to, but giving him fish oil supplements and switching his food have helped tremendously. He still has flakey skin, and licks his paws frequently though. Good luck! I would love to hear what your vet recommends! We are still searching to a solution to Max's itchy skin. |

| I forgot to say that the breeder had them on Diamond puppy food and I changed to Iams puppy food for small breeds because their poop was too soft and pale. I didn't even think about it could be the food. I will take them to the vet to make sure it's not mites or something else and if not maybe switch their food. Any suggestions? After I bought the Iam's a friend told me about Royal Canin for Yorkies. I have never heard of this, but found that they sell it at my local co-op. Anyone else use it? Ruth |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Totally agree. Puppies are much more vulnerable to mites/mange. Also, yeast often happens with mange, or following the resolution of the mange. Does the Mom have yeast or itching?

| Welcome to YT, and congratulations on your new puppies! Johnson's Baby Shampoo can be very drying to yorkie skin, which could cause them to itch. I'd recommend using something specially made for puppies from now on. Petsmart and Petco carry Biogroom which is a pretty good brand. Iams is a very poor quality food in my opinion (plus I detest it because of their well documented history of animal testing and abuse ). Petsmart &/or Petco will carry Wellness, Blue Buffalo and a couple of other good brands. If you have an ag/feed supply store nearby you can look for Nature's Variety, Taste of the Wild, Wellness, etc. I'm sorry - normally I can name several good foods but my mind's a blank this morning. Good luck with your new little ones! Bonny

| Good luck with your itchy puppies. I just thought I might mention that you can get a product at your vet's for itching caused by mites, mange, fleas etc. It's a liquid called Revolution and you put it on the skin by their shoulder blades and it kills anything on their skin causing them to itch. It won't help if the itching is caused by yeast, dry skin, or allergies but it would help the other things that you may not be able to see. (It also worms and protects against heartworms). You may want to discuss this product with your vet and see if it would be worth trying for your puppies. Good luck Teresa |

| We changed to an oatmeal based shampoo that has made a huge difference in our little boy's itching. Also make sure you do not apply shampoo directly to puppy. Dilute it first and rinse, rinse, rinse. Did I say rinse? |

| We are having the same problem with Norman. We are bathing him with Tropiclean shampoo and I've just started conditioning him with an organic deep moisturizer. I hope that a few more conditioning treatments will alleviate the itching - it has slowed down a lot. Maybe your pups would like a deep conditioning treatment! |

| Assessing your situation I would venture that the switch to a poor quality food an using human shampoo may just be what the problem is. I would slowly transition them to maybe a higher quality food and buy a good moisturizing DOG shampoo and conditioner Good luck, welcome and we wanna see some pics!!

| Thank you everyone, I so appreciate the great advice! I took the babies in to our vet and she did a scraping but found no mites or anything, thank goodness. I have changed their food to Royal Canin for Yorkies 8wks - 10mths. Have any of you used this? I will be going to the Pet store tomorrow for puppy shampoo. They are still itchy but not quite as bad. They did have ear mites and I am currently treating for this with Otomite Plus. I will post some pics just as soon as I get a minute to figure out how to do it. Thanks again, and Bella & Gracie thank you too. They are so darn precious! |

| My babies have mange. They got their 1st round of treatment today at the Vet's office and stayed there for 5 hours to make sure they had no adverse reactions. Poor babies, makes me sick. But, at least I know what is going on now. I have it on my neck and my arm and so my hubby and I had to slather all over with the lotion. They also gave me some Albon to give them for 9 days. They have 2 more rounds of the Ivermectin (sp) they sent home for me to administer. No UTI, thank goodness, but Bella has a touch of Upper Respiratory Infection. They ate some when we got home, not much, but they ate their supper up tonight. And, they played together again so I think they are feeling better. I'm exhausted from "demanging" the house all day. Anticipating the day this is all behind us. Oh, contacted the "breeder" (and I use that term loosely) and she said they don't have mange, I'm mistaken. I didn't expect she would own up to anything. I believe her business should be checked out by authorities. |

| Poor babies! And poor you!! I would agree that the breeder should be inspected, but I doubt that will amount to anything. I fostered a poodle pup four years ago that came from a puppy store bust and all the pups had been potentially exposed to parvo and sarcoptic mange (the contagious type, and what your guys have). He looked horrible by the end of treatment, his hair had fallen out so much - so be ready for that! - but he's absolutely fine and happy in his home and life now. One of our poodles got it - the one who played with him got punished for his kind acts! Meanwhile, I would advise as others have that once they're through this you use a gentle dog shampoo. I use Novapearls on my gang. And the one thing I haven't seen addressed is the food allergen possibilities. Chicken and beef are the most common protein allergens for dogs, and gluten may be an issue for a lot of dogs. I would look for a food that uses no chicken or beef products and consider a gluten free food as well. I cook for mine so I can't recommend one. They'll recover, the poor little things!!
