| Help is my puppy growing too fast???? Hello i just bring kobe to the vet today to have his second set of shot done, and he weight 2.8 lb, last time we there which is just two week ago he only weight 1.8 lb. My question is, is this normal? or am i feed him to much? he is 8 weeks old today. he have 4 meal a day: puppy milk replacement in morning, kible for lunch, cook food for diner (i only feed him boil chicken breast or beef with some veggies, or salmon with sweet potato), and finally have his milk b4 bed, and his mom weight 6 lb and dad 5 1/2 lb |

| I've never heard of an 8 week old puppy being overweight or being fed too much. They are growing pups! It sounds perfectly normal to me. Weight of parents is not always a determining factor. Jackson was 5lbs at 8 weeks, 6lbs at 12 weeks, 8.6lbs at 16 weeks, and stayed at 12lbs from 6 months - 1 year, where is now a healthy 16lbs. Also, his dinner doesn't sound balanced. Puppies need certain vitamins, minerals, etc, just cooking up a chicken and veggies is not sufficient as a whole meal. Some people homecook but it's very intricate and seeing a canine nutritionist is very important. Though he is still a bit too young to be away from his mother (12 weeks is preferable), I don't know why he is still having milk?

Donating YT 10K Club Member | He does not need to be given puppy milk replacer. He would be weaned by 8 weeks even if he were still with his mother.

| Don't depend on the parents weight too much. Louies mom was 6 pounds and dad was 4 pounds, yet Louie is 9.6 pounds at 7 months. You may want to consider decreasing the quantity of times your feeding. No need for the milk replacement, especially 2x/day. |

| He shouldn't be having the milk, and your other feeding should be geared to a high quality puppy food to give him necessary vitamins etc. for growth, and to set him up for life long healthy eating. You can supplement with a little tiny bit of added chicken, etc., but not as a whole meal. As a general rule of thumb, their adult weight will be double the weight at 12 weeks. It's not always accurate, but generally true.

Yorkie Talker | Hi there! Don't worry...when we brought Daisy home at roughly 8 weeks she was at the vet within the week. She weighed in at 3.1 pounds. Now, at roughly 13 weeks and at her second vet visit this morning, she is now 5.6 pounds! The vet said he suspects she will weigh anywhere between 10 and 14 pounds full grown. We give her plenty of food, but by no means are giving her anything unnecessary or you wouldn't expect....she is just growing! Unless you're like force feeding her every two seconds or something, I'm sure it's just taking its natural course.

| You should have a vet check him out and take a sample of his poo in a plastic bag. Has he been checked for coccidia? It is rather common in puppies, and causes diarrhea with mucus (jelly like) and can have blood. A vet would have to diagnose, and give medicine to treat. If you are switching dog food rapidly, that can also cause irregular stool.

| You're feeding him alot of liquid and soft food, and only one meal of kibble, so how can you expect his poop to be firm? While I agree with the 4 feedings of a pup so young, I don't understand why he isn't getting kibble at all four meals. Is your vet aware of what you are feeding him?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Is the poop still w/ mucus and jelly like? Is he going too often still? If yes, he needs to see a vet. Puppy health issues can start w/ something like diarrhea, and turn into something critical very fast.

| I have the same problem. Hi everyone. My puppy is 12 weeks now and I got him when he was 8 weeks. When we picked him up from the Petshop we traveled about 20 km and then we went to check him out with the Vet. He was wormed 3 days before we got him. Vet told us we have to give him his 1st injection straight away. The next day we saw his poo was not normal was very jelly like and with a bit of blood. We started to worry and we were monitoring his poops.he didn't have a proper poop usually was with more or less mucous. Went back to vet and I was told that maybe all the worming injection traveling and re-homing was too much for him or he had worms. We got probiotic medicine to help his stomach build up good bacterias and we were told to come back if it's not gonna get better. I was also advised to feed him little but often every 3 hrs or so so his tummy works all the time. He was weigh then and he was 900g then. Few days later i called my vet asking if they can run tests on his poo they asked me to bring it over but then because it was saturday they actually said theres no point sending it because they have to wait till Monday. We were mixing his food with boiled carrots and broccoli flowers. He loves it and his poop was normal for over 5 days no mucous or blood but today again he had one just jelly. Few days ago he had his booster jab and was weight again and he's 1.6kg. This poop really worries me I really thought he was over it. I'm trying to feed him only 3 times a day but I'm not sure if I should increase the amount of food per servings. I was told 30grams 4xdaily. He is going to his bowl checking if I gave him more food. There is no signs he's sick he's very playful and happy. About the COCCIDIA if this is a parasite wouldn't it be dead after worm tablets? And I think vet would know? Any help will be greatly appreciated! |

I do know that pups can get runny poo when they change environments..about the coccidia, here's some info I found on it directly- What are the symptoms of coccidiosis? The primary sign of an animal suffering with coccidiosis is diarrhea. The diarrhea may be mild to severe depending on the level of infection. Blood and mucous may be present, especially in advanced cases. Severely affected animals may also vomit, lose their appetite, become dehydrated, and in some instances, die from the disease. Most infected puppies encountered by the authors are in the four to twelve week age group. The possibility of coccidiosis should always be considered when a loose stool or diarrhea is encountered in this age group. A microscopic fecal exam by a veterinarian will detect the cysts confirming a diagnosis. It should be mentioned that stress plays a role in the development of coccidiosis. It is not uncommon for a seemingly healthy puppy to arrive at his new home and develop diarrhea several days later leading to a diagnosis of coccidia. If the puppy has been at the new home for less than thirteen days, then he had coccidia before he arrived. Remember, the incubation period (from exposure to illness) is about thirteen days. If the puppy has been with his new owner several weeks, then the exposure to coccidia most likely occurred after the animal arrived at the new home. Fortunately, coccidiosis is treatable. Drugs such as sulfadimethoxine (Albon®) and trimethoprim-sulfadiazine (Tribrissen®) have been effective in the treatment and prevention of coccidia. Because these drugs do not kill the organisms, but rather inhibit their reproduction capabilities, elimination of coccidia from the intestine is not rapid. By stopping the ability of the protozoa to reproduce, time is allowed for the puppy's own immunity to develop and remove the organisms. Drug treatments of one to three weeks are usually required. I cannot answer your ?'s for sure, b/c i am no vet and do not know as much as many other Yter's but, If the pup is still doing this, I'd take him back to the vet...keep an eye out...how is he doing now???? any update?
